If I remember correctly, he was offered Dr Strange LONG before Benedict Cumberbatch. He didn't want to commit to a superhero movie so it went to B.C.
He wouldve been an amazing dr strange.
With that said, he probably wouldn't do Joker either, but if he did, he would do an amazing job.

Anythings better than that "version" Leto did, that was abhorrent

Not sure I can see him in that role quite as well and honestly I'm not sure I'd want him committed to the MCU to that degree, as has been said post comeback he has a strong case for being the best working actor with The Master, Her, Inherant Vice and You Were Never Really There.

I feel that way about Wolverine's backstory. The more we know about who he was before he became the best there is at what he does, the weaker he becomes.

Barry Windsor-Smith's WEAPON X saga elegantly played into an origin while still making his history mysterious (if only out of deference to Claremont), and then Larry Hama (I think) inserted a neat save-all: memory implants. Which meant that any, some or all the origin stories could be regarded as false.

Yeah, I'll agree with this to an extent. But certain personas lean more heavily than others on the mystery. And The Joker falls further into that category than just about any character I can think of.

Killing Joke wasn't meant be canon tho, was it?

Don’t know or care.

I loved it, therefore it is canon.

That’s my barometer

It suck cause it is so dependent on the writing and story. He would be a perfect version of the Joker from The Dark Knigh Returns arc.

He has serious acting chops and could absolutely kill the role.

Joaquin could play the Ledger Joker as good or better than Ledger did. And that is saying a lot because Ledger nailed it. But that is the problem now as Joaquin's joker would likely look too much like Ledgers.

Would have preferred Adrien Brody.

Always thought he could have made a perfect Joker

Now this is someone I never thought of for the role and he might be just the right guy to put a new spin on the Joker. I support this.

At the time, it was rumored the movie was going to take a darker role

So Leto is really done?? And Batffleck is done too??

Just scrap it and start again.

I prefer Vincent Gallo for that role he will demand an actual BJ on screen from Harley Quinn just to make it real

i can only name a very few actors who could pull off joker as good as Ledger and he is one of them

Leto has a separate Joker movie coming out and I wish it wasnt. Might be an overload of Jokers especially since his version is crap.

Ben is done. Thank God!

Outside obvious marketing never understood why they try to put a young guy as the Joker

Older, devilish bastard for the role will wok best imho

Btw i think Joaquin may end up be the best Joker we ever got (never been a fan of Nicholson either), i think he got the presence for it

My only problem is he's imho too big/thick/heavy man to play it

Joaquin Phoenix's THE JOKER Movie Character Details Revealed; Robert De Niro Eyed for Role

There's an awful lot of buzz surrounding Warner Bros.' plans for a Joker movie starring Joaquin Phoenix and while some fans are scratching their heads over the necessity for an 80s set origin story revolving around the Clown Prince of Crime, the project definitely has some potential. Todd Phillips will be at the helm and now some very interesting character details have been revealed about the DC Comics film.

According to That Hashtag Show, not only will the Joker movie be set in its own universe but it could be creating "an entirely new Joker mythology." That presumably means it won't necessarily follow the comic books but seeing as the villain doesn't really have one definitive origin story, that does make sense. Anyway, here are those character breakdowns; unfortunately, none of them sound like they're characters being lifted from the comic books and being reimagined for this standalone Joker movie.

Penny - Supporting Female (60-74) Caucasian. Lower class, very attractive in her younger days, still feels that way about herself. But recently her health has started failing, and she's nearly bedridden in her Lower East Side apartment which she shares with her grown son who just moved back home. She's obsessed with her former employer and can't believe that this is what her life has come to, that she has ended up here, like this...

The site speculates that this could be The Joker's mother and that she'll have struggled with mental illness over the course of her life. It's also said that a younger actress is being cast to play Penny.

Sophie Dumond - Supporting female (27-34) to play African American or to play Latina. Not beautiful, has a hardness to her, a single mother living on the Lower East Side, doing the best she can, trying to make ends meet; worn out by the grind of the city. She understands how the system is stacked against her and the people in her community, how unjust it all is for them. She's just trying to catch a break.

Murray Franklin - Male (65-75) Caucasian.

There's no description for this guy but it's said that Robert DeNiro is currently being eyed for the role!

Randall - Supporting Male (40-59)Caucasian. Thinks he's the wisest and most knowledgeable person in any room he's in, tries to present himself as a mentor to everybody, but is really just looking out for himself, burly.

Gary - Supporting Male (30-49) any ethnicity to play a dwarf; Randall's best friend, he's good-natured and a buddy to his colleagues at work, one of the only decent people in the whole movie.

Hoyt Vaughn - Supporting Male (50-69) any ethnicity the old-school manager of hotel staff. He's seen it all, and finds it difficult to give a shit about much of anything anymore.

Detective Garrity - Supporting Male (50-59) any ethnicity. Police Detective in a city on the brink; a by-the-book cop, worn down by all his years on the force. He doesn't care about or take into consideration any of the societal or political ramifications of his cases.

Detective Burke - Supporting Male (30-39) any ethnicity. A Police Detective and Garrity's partner; he's an asshole, who gets off by being in a position of authority. Being a cop is how he defines himself.

how about we reboot the whole DCMU and base it all around this movie.
