Joe Riggs: I made 400 grand during the time when sponsorships...

"used to living at a certain level" is code for we blew it all on unnecessary shit.

Exactly. All due respect to Mr. Diesel, but if you can't survive on 67k a year, you should probably make a few budgeting decisions.

$67K is the worst he's done and isn't enough to take care of a family of four, so he's going to quit and go to work for $57K?

Probably have to think about health care and such if he has a familyl

He would never get accepted to any police academy due to his extensive drug use first off.

Also, I have zero sympathy for people who live outside of their means.

Move this thread to MMA discussion.

The whole becoming a cop I dont understand!??

Cant he become a personal trainer or some job thats safer????

Dont mma coaches make decent money?

trainer fees and everything else that goes along with being a pro fighter probably not taken into account idk...

cops, military etc get soooo many benefits and perks too

my buddy was in the coast guard, got paid a lot, gets a huge severance, free college, discounts on everything, and doesnt ever seem to have to pay for shit

I definitely smell a pork product of some type.

400k a year, thats a good 10 years . his fault for living like a king

10 years? That's kind of ridiculous.

He's in the highest tax bracket and that income is all contract. That means he's giving up 30-40% of it right off the top in state and federal taxes.

So lets say that brings him down to 250k. He's got a manager taking 10% and a gym taking 10%, so now we're at $170,000.00 He's also paying sticker for his health insurance and has a wife and kids.

On what planet does that last ten years?

He likely got paid next to nothing the first few years of his career and had debt like most young people do. Bills to pay before he ever had a big year.

Riggs isn't in the UFC anymore so off to the MMA discussion this thread goes

Never really a fan but I hope he does well in Bellator

I know, its just that people like to talk shit about ufc pay but I thought I post joe riggs experience with ufc pay and the fact is, he was an exciting fighter who made good money.

Ha. So true. None of his comments made sense. For starters, 400k could easily set you up for life if invested wisely, let alone the 10 or so years of consistently making no less than 67K. I think he should be more worried about brain damage than money

I get his point. The money flow is varies a lot if you're not in the top tier.
Must be hard to manage. If guys are not smart, he can end up really broke.

I'm guessing his checks equaled 67k, but he has to pay his manager/gym/training partners. Or maybe he meant he took hoe 67k. iono.

The thing with MMA and combat sports in general is that unless you make it to the top level and remain at the top for a significant period of time, you're not gonna become rich or wealthy doing it. But, you can earn a living and be "well off" if you invest and save your money wisely. The problem is, is that when these fighters get paid, they tend to blow their money, so they're living on a shoe string budget when they go through their sponsorship money, and their fight money. If anything, fighters need financial advisers.

Finally someone with some life experience chiming in.

He always says I am coming to knock you the fuck out and never fallows through

From reading what he said, it seems that he living like its 2005-2006 but 400k is totally different from 67k. Seems like he is not being smart with his money.

it didnt seem like he was saying he was broke, though feast or famine is extreme he was merely trying to give an example of how pay in MMA can be great one year, to average joe money the next, to nothing after that...but obviously from 400K in one year(probably before taxes) to 67K another then it's a pretty wild change. You don't necessarily have to be spending irresponsibly for that to be a major change since it's not nearly the same money. Even going from 200K to 60K is a major drop off. Just about nobody who makes 400K a year budgets the same way a 60K a year person does. His mistake was probably not anticipating a drop off so major. I can see a lot of guys thinking at that time as MMA was rabidly growing, so would fighter pay. Also, he probably didnt expect his own drop off being a young guy. He didnt say that 60K isnt enough to live on..as he was talking about being a cop for a living for a consistant 60K per year which would be good. He just wants another crack at making big money.
