As my summer semester winds down I've been able to pick up a game I left off a couple years ago, Bravely Default.

If you're a JRPG fan you need to play this. It's a Job-based game and the art, music, mechanics and just about everything are perfect. The dialogue is really entertaining for the most part, except for when the game takes itself a little too seriously. But the main characters are just great, and everything is fully voice acted- that is very well done too.

Anyway, I decided to take a gander at the one that started all of this. Bravely Default is actually a sequel to an older game, Final Fantasy: 4 Warriors of Light. Now I've had this for years but just never played it. I popped it in last night and it's really fun!

Gotta say, for a DS game this is beautiful. The art style is lovely, and the design of the world is so satisfying. Towns and buildings are detailed and active. The way the wind pushes over a field is a neat effect. There is a tangible curvature to the worldmap and in individual towns which is entertaining and just nice to look at. The music is also delightful- it's a combination of some pretty spot on NES-synth tunes and more realistic flutes/woodwinds and strings. Everything is just really cute and sweet.

Combat seems simple and fun. I just got through the first dungeon, and so far it seems as though some of the strategy has been removed. When I used Cure I don't believe I was able to select who I was curing. The target ended up being the character I wanted but it was a little worrisome that I wasn't able to make the decision myself. It's possible I'm missing something.

Anyway just thought I'd make a mini thread about it. If you're up for something relaxing and smile-inducing, pick it up. It's only $22.00 on amazon right now.

I already played this but on the older version

Are the jobs basically like classes?
Yes. In Heroes of Light they're called "Crowns" but they're classes. So a Knight gives more HP, defense, etc. A Ninja would have high agility and crit rate.

Good call! I have to track down a DS copy, add to my DS/3DS RPG library. Looks really great and I've never played it before. Don't play new FF games so it's cool to have an older one to get.

Isn't Final Fantasy V also jobs? Final Fantasy Tactics PS1 too.

I think I played the Bravely free 3DS demo.

FF III and IV are on DS.

Yes.
My personal opinion is that the Tactics games are king of Job based RPG's.
And while the story in the original Tactics is the best in the subseries, I think the job system in TA2 might be better. Which is saying a lot.

Yeah kind of. In the FF games, you get to certain levels or skills in a job, and it opens up other better jobs. You can also mix in some of the skills from other jobs to try and make the best character you can. It's not a bad system.

I played Bravely Default when it came out and I liked it. Wouldn't say its a must play but it is good. If I remember right it has a very disappointing final act. Never played warriors of light, but I do like those images

I'm playing Tactics A2 on hard and will try those crazy Ultima builds, infinite loops, blue magic abuse and every trick I didn't do on my first playthough 10 years ago.

I played the crap out of FF Tactics back in the day. Just don't use Orlandu the game becomes easy mode after you get him in your party.

I played old school FF series in japanese. I couldn't read well so I couldn't progress much further. I really enjoyed FF tactics when I moved to America.
