The label "Muay Thai fighter" gets thrown around way too often in MMA. Way too many fighters are getting praised for their "muay thai". From Jose Aldo. To Edson. To Cerone. To Overeem...and yes, even to Joanna.

Being a good kickboxer =/= muau thai.

Ladies and gentlemen here is the hard truth. There are only TWO real muay thai stylists in the UFC. Valentina Shevchenko, and Darren Till. Everyone else are just good kickboxers.

Muay Thai isnt about being able to throw sick combos. Its about timing. Distance control. Counters. Making reads. High use of elbows, with a fantastic clinch work. Want to know who is real muay thai? Watch them clinch spar thai style.

Now this little lady called Karolina isnt the best muay thai practitioner, but she practiced her muay thai clinching. She exposed Rose's weakness. A lot of mma fighters have this weakness. This fight could have gone so much more differently had Joanna actually put in time to learn real muay thai and not dutch kickboxing after Valentina tossed her around that ring 3 times.

A good boxer with an understanding of kicks will always beat a good kickboxer. I think MMA simply hasnt adopted clinching yet. But like everything else before it, it will take somebody special to come in and actually show us how its done and have everyone else follow. Mighty Mouse is an example of someone who you can actually see put in the time to learn it. Props to him.

So Joanna abandons her clinch for 1 fight and all of a sudden she was never a muay thai fighter? I don't buy that, Joanna will merk Rose in the clinch in the rematch

Joanna's use of Muay Thai clinch against Jessica Andrade...

Thailand is Anderson's favourite place in the world. He picked both his martial art and his dick pills there.

Thailand is pretty much teh Brazil of Asia.

"In a classic Thaiboxing attack Joanna uses the Thai plum control (double neck tie) to pull her opponent’s head down and attacks with knees. As her opponent is able to lift her head back up, Joanna keeps the left neck tie and attacks with a right elbow to the face. Please note that elbows in Muay Thai are like “knives” (used to cut opponents) and knees are “hammers” (knockout strikes)."

I understand she is knowledgeable of the clinch and has used it. Everyone who fought under muay thai rules has to learn it. The problem is that it is not second nature to her. It has not been built into her instincts. She will use it when its pretty obviously handed to her. Anybody can throw strikes from the clinch when the fighter is weak. But can you control and manipulate your opponent in the clinch? Thats when the years of clinching comes into play.

Clinch with someone with superior ground game... Good strategy!!

Joanna's clinch is fine. Rose just dominated the distance for the entirety of that short fight.

Long time ago when I used to train. I sparred with dutch styled fighters. They knew the clinch offensively but didn't know what to do past the rudimentary part. Maybe it's me but when I train clinch against someone that is skilled; we avoid the stuff like the plum. I know it's a big deal in mma but honestly I rarely see it in muay thai.

Karolina did. Im sure her ground game isnt any better than joanna's. I could be wrong. But anyways a solid clinch if done properly can keep the fight standing.

Rose is the most overrated grappler at WSW. She was ducking top ranked grapplers for 3 years before titleshot, Karolina held her down with little trouble.
