I thought that Rothwell was going to finish JDS and I have already eaten all my humble pie. My predictions have not been great lately. Still I don't want people to get all excited about JDS only to have their hopes dashed again.

JDS is a talented athlete, fast, strong, agile, great coordination. He also has a lot of heart and a good chin. In terms of skillset he is a good boxer for MMA, and he is very effective at dictating that fights take place in a boxing format. He has improved his kicks when his opponent is hanging back too, although he's still not super confident with them I think. On the ground or in the clinch just scramble out and box.

He is top 10 but he is never going to be champion again with that skillset, and against the top 5-7 he is going to continue to either have awkward fights where neither fighter is able to impose his game on the other, or he is going to continue to take a lot of damage.

I thought Rothwell would be able to walk JDS down and force him to grapple and trade. If he could have done I have no doubt he would have stopped him, and he has been able to do it to most of his recent opponents, or they have willingly stepped up to him for one reason or another. But against a fast, agile opponent with good footwork he simply wasn't able to catch him, so he got outpointed. Fair enough, those are the rules. It didn't really change my opinion on either fighter.

If you can take JDS down and keep him down you win. Not sure who can do that in 2016 with the time limits and standups. I have never forgotten the end of the fight with Carwin.

If you can put him on the cage and hold him there you win. Velasquez.

Barnett and Cormier have to be mentioned here as well at least potentially. It's a possibility.

If you have the MT and either the speed to keep up with him, or elite counter striking, you win. Overeem did it, Hunt didn't but I wouldn't rule him out in a rematch.

Alternatively you can just match fire with fire and box with him and whoever MMA boxes better wins. Stipe came close, Arlovskii could outbox him but he couldn't take his punches.

So it all adds up to basically JDS is at #5 and he is staying at #5, he's the gatekeeper for contenders. He's in a sh*t position as far as matchmaking goes kind of like Gustafsson, either give him significantly lower ranked guys, or guys who you know are going to give him a beating, and either way almost anyone who looks relevant is a rematch. He is a top 5-7 fighter, and he has a lot of heart, but believe me he can not withstand many more beatings like Velasquez Stipe Overeem, he is only human and he just doesn't have the tools to stop them doing what they do.

There is no HW with the cardio to GSP someone so JDS will always be dangerous.

And don't say Cain... he can't even get through a training camp anymore

He can't be the gatekeeper if he just beat the arguable #1 contender. Gatekeepers don't do that.

People forget he was out for over a year and was inactive just like Cain was and still is. He also had multiple injuries to his knees. But, it seems like he's back into fighting shape.

We were all wrong about JDS being on the decline.

JDS have a really good shot at becoming champion again tbh...

He could score an interim title, the UFC likes handing those out lately.

I think Rothwell had a bad strategy for yesterday's fight. You can't stand and slowly bang with JDS. He has good reach, works good shots to the body in with his shots to the head, and has the power to chip away at your cardio. His big weakness is backing straight up when getting attacked, and he did that multiple times when Rothwell moved forward quickly, but when you are plodding around he keeps his head and circles out of trouble.

JDS is still just a striker with great TDD. That's all he is, and that's all he is ever going to be.

Well he has beat almost everyone pretty one sided. The only close fight he won was against Stipe. He lost to Cain and Overeem. So saying everyone in the top 5-7 will beat him is an understatement. I think if his confidence grow he could definitely be a champion again.

Werdum: Old and JDS is his nightmare stylistic
Cain: Depending on how he looks next couple of fights with new testing. The Cain Werdum beat loses to the JDS that beat Rothwell.
Stipe: Already beat him. Can do it again. Tough match up though
Overeem. Anything can happen. JDS with confidence and letting his hands go, knocks him out.

has a win over the 2 guys fighting for the belt, just outclassed a top contender, brb gatekeeper

This thread sucks ball sack. You continue telling us what JDS can't do. He's back with Dorea now, his sensei. He'll take the title off Werdum.

Big Ben shit the bed last night. Sad and disappoint. He couldn't even cut off the cage and just let JDS reset at will. He got to work his octagon generalship.

It was like watching Condit vs Diaz, except w/out the part where Nick put the beatdown on Carlos.

There's no dominant force in the heavyweight division.

Any of the top 5, 6 guys can take each other out on a any given night.

Cain used to be the one who was considered the guy to beat, but has shown holes in his game in recent fights.

If JDS fights the way he did against Rothwell, he can beat any top heavyweight. He seems to have realized what his strengths are (boxing, footwork, speed, cardio, tdd) and focused on that, which is a smart approach.

Bottom line, he has just as good a chance at being champ than anyone else.

HW division is truly horrific so anyone in the top 5 could be champ depending on matchups

I agree that this isn't the JDS of a few years ago who had a lot of confidence and better reflexes.

However, it's possible he becomes champion again but not likely. Time isn't on his side, either. It wouldn't surprise me to see him fight like an older George Foreman. JDS has a good enough beard to eat a shot here and there to land a big one. With JDS's power, he's always a punch or two away from putting you on your ass.

I wouldn't bet on him landing the shot against any fighter inside of the top 4 but it wouldn't surprise me if he did.

He's nothing great. His style is most effective against a lumbering brawler like Rothwell

JDS is better. His style feeds off confidence and outside of his heart he's not the mentally strongest fighter around. I'm not sold on him being a contender again, but if he stays tight and builds some momentum he might surprise you. If he gets in there with Werdum again he has as good a chance as anyone. Remember, he's only lost to two fighters in almost a decade. Overeem is hot and cold and Cain's body seems to be falling apart.

so where does this put big ben?

Big Ben has already lost to Velasquez, Arlovskii and Hunt. And he got a split decision against Nelson. Stipe ducked him. I want to see him fight Stipe and Browne. He could also fight Magomedov I suppose. I hope the HW division doesn't get stagnant again where people have already beaten all the guys immediately below them and lost to the ones above them. He is improving though even though he has had a sh*t ton of fights.
