With eight wins in nine Octagon appearances, Jailton Almeida is gearing up to face fellow heavyweight contender Alexander Volkov at UFC 321 on Saturday.

“Besides being [6 feet, 7 inches] tall, Volkov has almost 50 MMA fights. I have no doubt he will bring different challenges to me, that's why I trained so hard in this camp,” Almeida told Sherdog.com “I’m aware that this win will take me to the title fight.”

Almeida was able to learn from Volkov’s previous losses to Tom Aspinall and Ciryl Gane, who will square off for heavyweight gold in the UFC 321 main event.

“He uses his range very well with straight punches and teeps. But he gets kind of lost when the opponents cut the distance,” Almeida said. “That’s exactly what Aspinal did submitting him in the sequence. Gane did a more even fight with him but showed some weak points on the ground. He gave some positions to Gane on the ground where a more experienced grappler would have submitted him.”

Almeida, Volkov Fared Differently vs. ‘The Black Beast’

Both Almeida and Volkov have a common opponent in Derrick Lewis. While the Russian suffered a late KO loss to “The Black Beast” at UFC 229, Almeida took a five-round verdict over Lewis in the UFC Fight Night 231 headliner in November 2023.

“Lewis was also a very dangerous striker. Actually he knocked out Volkov, but I was able to deal with his knockout power and dominate him for five rounds,” Almeida said.

Although the matchup with Volkov will be three rounds, the Galpao da Luta product revealed that he trained in camp as if the fight would be for five.

I've no idea who wins this one. Very intriguing match up for sure..

Assuming Aspinall beats Gane, Almeida is the only decent HW that he hasn't beat. After that it's just rematches or fun fights with LHW's moving up. I'm assuming since Gane went 50/50 with Volkov on the ground, Almeida will have his way, but if Volkov keeps it on the feet then Almeida is pretty trash standing. I'm probaably more interested in this fight than Aspinall/Gane.

Volkov is going to whoop his ass so it doesn't really matter. this guy doesn't have the gas to grapple these big oafs.

Big Volk is going to get taken down. But would he be able to do what Blaydes did?

Seems like nothing exciting has happened in the HW division since before Ngannou left. These duldrums are bad. No one gives a fuxk about Tom fighting Gane either. Tom is good and got to where he is with very little fanfare or publicity....pretty cool but the guy is more well known for Jon ducking him than for actually fighting. He's so good, but no one wants to see Gane's 19th title shot and lots of folks just haven't seen him fight much, myself included. UFC has handled this division TERRIBLY. I feel bad for Tom. I'll feel even worse when he gets passed up for the White House card so Poatan and Jones can fight. This should be the marquee division, and it just isn't.

Yeah I agree, he'll submit Volkov IMO and then fight for the title. He poses a real threat.

Am I the only one seeing Volkov just picking him apart with distance? His cardio, footwork, distance, grappling, height. Its a tough fucking walk for Jailton

At least thats how I see it

Jailton is a curious case: He was supposed to fight at LHW but after taking a short-notice fight at HW decided to stick at the division because the route to a title shot was supposedly easier...
Dude has a wrestleheavy approach that gave him a brazilian nickname of Jailton "Malhagomedov", which is a Khabibesque comparison.
Right now the LHW division is stacked with incredible... 0 wrestlers at the top 10, which makes me wonder if being at LHW wouldn't be a faster route ta title contention...

Dana sent all the wrestlers to Bellator and the PFL. Davis, Bader, Anderson, Jones... these guys and more would all dump Poatan on his ass quickly.

Poatan is an exciting guy and a fun champ, but let's not kid ourselves that he would not get man handled in a more wrestling heavy division.
