I've Just Shattered My Ankle

dude no way that sucks

are you healthy (not overweight), are you older, are you naturally thinboned?

wtf how does this even happen

Thanks for all the support, it does mean a lot.

Unfortunately, i am now an old cunt, had a birthday a few weeks back, 66.
Not overweight, fit, swim 1.5-2.0kms each day, been doing that for about 5 years now.
As for the bone density? I chatted to the guy who took the x-rays and i suggested that maybe i had poor bone density? He said that he'd looked at that, but mentioned my bones looked 'pretty good.'

As to how it happened, don't know. I was in a hurry, changed direction, as i went left into a different room, one of my legs kinda gave way and said, 'I'm sorry, i'm not supporting you anymore!'

The hospital just rang, my operation is going to be on the 22nd, so next week.

Maybe look towards weight training to help minimize bone loss and to strengthen muscles and ligaments. It can make a huge difference

This past Saturday i was walking through the kitchen, quickly turnt left to go into another room, when one of my legs gave way, and i dropped straight on my arse! I didn't slip or trip on anything, i have no idea why it happened. Just came down like a sack of spuds.
So i was sitting on the tiled floor thinking, well that didn't hurt, went to get up and screamed! I just couldn't get up. I spent the next hour laying on the kitchen floor avoiding the pain of moving. Ended up scooting along the floor on my bum, pulled myself on to the bed and fell in and out of sleep.

The next day i called a friend, she came around and convinced me to go to hospital, and she called for an ambo. Did x-rays, put a cast on my leg[which was incredibly painful even with the happy gas.] then i was transferred to a larger hospital.
Spent two day laying on my back in the worst pain i've ever felt, and bored out of my skull.
Yesterday i started using crutches for the first time ever, don't like them! I was discharged and a mate took me home. The unit where i live is up a flight of steps.

The outside part of my right ankle is shattered and in many pieces. The inner ankle has multiple fractures. Even the slightest movement is unbelievably painful.
Next week i'll be having an operation to have some plates screwed into place.
I asked the surgeon if i'd still be able to continue with my long established ballet career? His reply? "No fuckin' way, you bastard!!!"

I must admit i'm worried about the operation. I expect there will be life-long consequences from this 'accident.' Permanent pain, a change in the way i walk?

It's the early hours of the morning here in Oz. First day trying to get around my home on the crutches. Don't know how i'm gonna do little everyday things like cooking, laundry, etc. I guess i'll be eating lots of cold, canned food. I do have some friends who live close by, they said they'd help.
Feeling really down.
Sounds like you need to drink more milk.
Good luck with the operation, get well.

Were you in a race or just fuckin around?

Did someone help you or you managed it all by yourself?

80 year old woman on the opposite side of the road made a left hand turn in front of me, she told the police she saw me. I was dipping left to go around her when she slammed on the brakes. My front wheel went into her rear seat and I think the bike swung right and slammed my leg between it and the car, then swung left and tossed me 40 some feet.

The helicopter was too far away so they just loaded me in the ambulance assuming I wasn't going to make it. My wife's cousin was an EMT on the scene, when I saw her at a family party years later she broke down sobbing because she assumed I was dead. I knew the cousin from grade school/HS, she had recognized my name.

i got some good stories out of it.

I’ve got a plate and 7 screws in my ankle. Broke and dislocated it along with tearing all the tendons and ligaments… thank god I was drunk when it happened. It was black the next morning and within 24 hours I was having surgery. I was young so it healed better than it would now. But that first week after surgery was absolutely brutal! Nowadays I’d demand more than Tylenol 3…

Sorry to hear all that. Wishing you a speedy recovery.

I ended up getting a walker after knee surgery and its much more comfortable than crutches.

Not sure what to do about stairs though

Well i had my surgery a couple of days ago and there was an 'incident.' I think it's called a needlestick injury?

At one point during the surgery, while using a drill in order to attach one of the plates, the surgeon injured one of his fingers.
From what i can gather, he was supporting my ankle with one hand, while his other hand was obviously operating the drill, which was inside of me. The drill went through the ankle bone and ended up on the 'outside' where his other hand was helping to support my ankle! The drill bit momentarily made contact with one of his double-gloved fingers.

When i was told of this i immediately thought of the possibility of cross contamination. Obviously there is an official procedure that follows something like this happening.

I spoke to the surgeon, and also a member of the team that was in theatre during my operation. They both told me the injury was so minor there wasn't even a drop of blood. When we spoke on the next day, the surgeon didn't have a band aid on his finger, and when he showed me the 'wound,' it was barely a scratch at best. Plus they both said that the injury happened outside my body.

I have to admit that when i first heard that this had happened, i thought of all the worst-case scenarios.

Well, i'll have to wait and see what happens. Maybe i will come down with some type of 'super hepatitis HIV 'covid' thingy?'

back in 2007 when I was in my 20's, I got into a drunken fight in tijuana. Got my ass kicked bad. My ankle got rolled up and was in pain, I couldnt put any weight on it but figured it was just a really bad sprain. I got back home and being a dumbass broke mofo with poor insurance, I proceeded to walk around and work on it for close to a year.

It never healed back correctly and was disfigured and my foot was pointing at outward angle. Finally went to doctor and he said that I had snapped the outside bone, dislodged my ankle out of the socket and tore bunch of shit. I needed to rebreak the bone, put the ankle back into the socket and put a rod in to hold it in place and I would never regain full range of motion again. He had zero fucking clue how I walked around like that and worked on it for a year.
