The idea that you should never hit a child is also wrong in my opinion.
Not every child is the same. Not every situation is the same. its not 1/0, black or white. Sometimes, in certian situations, these things help.
I know damn well that i deserved a slap when i lit fireworks in my moms makeup box and blew it up in our living room. I loved playing with fire as a kid. After the beating, it never crossed my mind agian. Worked for me!
I've never hit my kids, but I have always understood that there is one type of situation in which I would find it appropriate. If they do something incredibly dangerous, something that very likely could have resulted in severe pain, I feel it appropriate to inflict on them a small portion of that pain. It's basic conditioning.
That has nothing to do with decency or respect, though. You teach those by modeling the behavior you want.
