Television It: Welcome to Derry 🤡

Liked the season until the last half of the last episode.

I actually went back on watched the two theatrical movies and it reminded me what a lot of my problems were with the series. The movies werent entirely Muschietti, who was directing a script from by other people. Fukunagi was a big influence on the tone of the movies. Watching them I was reminded of just how starkly different Muschiettis take on Pennywise is. In the movies theres no real wisecracks, no catchphrases ("Duck and cover kids", "Do I have face on my face?") and theres no point where hes played for laughs. On the series, hes essentially an R rated version of Jim Carrey in The Mask. Theres definite moments of the dark creepiness, but theres a lot of ham-fisted jokes and what not as well.

Muschietti is just very, very on the nose and doesnt really do subtlety. Instead of a weird-looking clown, hes basically a demon with bright eyes and doing stuff like swinging a giant meat cleaver. Is what it is. Im still glad the show is successful, and theres still moments and stuff I like, and Im probably in for the long haul of 3 seasons. Hopefully he dials back the whole circus act of it. Yeah, hes a clown, but that doesnt mean hes blowing a tuba and riding a circus wagon.
