It’s insane to me that Colby Covington is an underdog to Buckley

Colby media whored his way into a situation that had him either fighting huge names or fighting for the belt. Since he flipped the troll switch (RDA), it's been:

Lawler
Usman (for the title)
Woodley
Usman (for the title)
Masvidal
Edwards (for the title)

So here, against a relatively low-profile opponent, his motivation to get his face punched must have been at an all-time low. That is the feeling I got watching him in the buildup. I mean, he's playing a character and all, but you can still see about 10% of the real Colby under the mask. A guy who fights on hustle and grit not feeling like he wants to get out of bed is not a recipe for success.

I take your point but we watched Leon absolutely out class him, to the point he was grappling with him just because.

Colby is on the wrong side of 35, largely inactive and most of his career wins have come from fighters on losing streaks with one foot out the door.

"Getting out of bed" Colby isn't a thing IMO, you just saw how he matches up against someone on a win streak. Plenty of other guys would give Colby the same treatment, he just hasn't fought them.

I actually gasped when they showed the screen with the rankings on it. number fucking 6, and based on what? what a stupid thing. if you put a 3 in front of that it would still be too generous

Get in here @koa pomaikai

Anyone else find it insane that Colby is a 2 to 1 dog against Buckley?

I mean, prime for prime, Buckley would be a +400-500 dog against Covington.

Buckley has been taken down and held down by terrible low level grapplers. The idea that Buckley can through strength and explosiveness keep Colby off him is just dumb, he hasn’t been able to stuff takedowns from far worse wrestlers.

Colby also has an iron chin, he has been hit flush from punchers that hit harder than Buckley and he’s never been KOed.

Buckley doesn’t have 5 round cardio, I can’t see Colby getting his chin cracked against Buckley, even if he’s washed ( and I do think his foot was broken in the Edward’s fight ).

Colby even if washed, has an iron chin, far better elite wrestling, and a huge cardio edge.

Buckley has explosiveness, power and terrible grappling/takedown defense.

I see Colby grinding him out, Covington should be -240ish here not +200

How am I wrong? I just can’t see Buckley as a favorite.

Still insane? Lol

Not trying to sound condescending but if you have been watching the sport long enough, you will start to notice the patterns of fighters. Colby has been on a decline for years and most of his best wins were over aging vets on their way out of the sport. Colby lacks the physicality to beat guys like Buckley, Shavkat, Edwards, etc.

The odds were right because they have a more educated opinion. Just look at his record and you will see that Colby's last win was over Masvidal 2.5 years ago, and the last win before that was against an old Lawler who was injured in the first round, then RDA, who was undersized and older, then Demian Maia, also at the tail end of his career. Factor in his horrible performance against Edwards which was a terrible showcase.

Colby is only relevant because he blows Trump daily. There are infinitely more talented fighters at 170 who dont get the same hype.

Guys like you are the reason bookies make money.

Lawler, Woodley, and Masvidal all coming off back-to-back losses and were washed.

It's scandalous that he received three title shots, and shows much the UFC is a case of 'if your face fits' cos he sure as hell isn't a draw.

My point was: he was used to fighting big names. Either the current title holder or fighters who would elevate his profile and bring a big payday. In that sense, Buckley was definitely not his dream matchup.

Nope.

He let it slip in his interview before the fight that he was "stuck w this matchup" before trying to cover it up and say "nah this is a great fight"

Just to be clear: I am not making excuses for Colby (whom I hate). Just sharing my observation about his demeanor leading up to the fight. Yeah, he's faded and probably getting a bit tired of playing that goofy character ...but also, getting in there with Buckley is not as fun as fighting for the title or competing with washed dudes with a big name.

I missed that. But I could sense that energy regardless.
