Islam not wanting to give rematches:

We have had WAY too many rematches... if there isn't an actual rivalry like AS vs Sonnen, Izzy vs Pereira, or DC vs Jones... its usually not exciting... Usman vs Edwards was such a boring 2 fights other than 1 exciting kick... I think a guy like Islam wants to beat enough different people to be considered a GOAT and he doesn't want to retire with 40 fights... He has 28.. I think he wants like 4 more... so every one counts.
 
Islam has always said yes mostly, and he's had more pull outs of opponents than any champ recently I can think of. He doesn't want to end up with a shitty title defense record because there are only 2 names on it because all he got were rematches.

Actually I think he's got the short end, with people pushing Charles rematch then Volk rematch (before the KO), and now Arman rematch. If you look at records of retired champs, the 2 wins over someone really doesn't boost their legacy. With Khabib they gave him a fresh matchup each time and I think they should do the same for Islam.

This is a good point Cain Velasquez had 5 fights in a row against JDS and Bigfoot.... if he had gotten other names his record would look better... Usman with his 2 fights vs Mas and 2 vs Colby really hamper his resume as a champ as well... yeah you have 5 defences but you beat 3 guys.... and 2 of them people think suck

Exactly. This is why I hate rematches so much.

Let's look at someone like Volk who fought Max 3x, has only fought 3 guys in the top 15 right now as he's fighting for a belt. Yair, Ortega, Max. Ortega and Max said they are not staying at FW. Lets say Volk beats Lopes for the belt and Max/Ortega leave to LW. Volk will have been champ since 2019 and has only fought Lopes and Yair in the whole top 15. We're talking a guy with 16 fights in UFC and 9 of them were title fights. He's a guy who could be champ fighting in UFC for almost a decade, but would be pretty much like a new FW champ with how many fresh matchups. Rematches just screw up the divisions.

Islam has said he's open to fighting anyone but prefers fresh opponents. From a fighter’s perspective, it makes sense—a grueling three-month fight camp is more exciting when preparing for a new challenge rather than facing the same opponent again.
 
Now that we've determine this thread has no merit, if i've learned about mma over the years rematches are rarely worth the bottleneck they create for each division.

This. We have too many (instant) rematches. But people just try to go out of there way to make up reasons to hate on Islam beings he leaves no real reasons.

Yep, it's just lazy promoting in my opinion. I'm rarely excited for the instant ones. A rematch like Armin is different in that he was young and it's been a long time. But the 8 months after we need to run it back fights like DDP/Strickland instead of fighting Khamzat is just boring.

And this injury talk is another fallacy. Fighters get injured, but that doesn't disqualify them forever from a title shot. Charles has already had two fights. Arman will have to have at least one, but eventually they will have to have the title shot again. Nobody gets injured because they want to get injured. Charles has already paid the price, and Arman will pay the price too.
 
Islam just wants easy fights, trying to fight Justin Gaethje who has already been finished twice in title fights.
 
When he was against Money Moicano there was all that talk about "p4p fight anyone, just hit 155", now that Topuria has entered the fight he's being fussy, and there are idiots who still defend him!
 
If we want the best fight the best, rematches are necessary. Imagine in other sports when the fools would be out of the competition, “because my PB is better than that guys” or “I want new guys running against me in the final, because I was last year in the final against them too”
The champ should always fight the number one contender or get rid of the rankings and belts and just have fun fights.

Yeah Charles, Volk x2 and Tsarukyan are such easy fights.. and I don't even think Islam has mentioned Gaethje as a potential opponent, has he?

Also wasn't this thread supposed to be about how he doesn't want rematches but now you want him to fight Topuria, which is not a rematch? Make up your mind sherbro.
 
Arman fight was so long ago, the rematch still has that fresh fight feel imo. Charles rematch otoh, not so much.
