News Islam Makhachev becomes #1 P4P

Jones is undefeated in multiple weight classes and has double-digit title defenses in one of them. And yes, he's only fought once in the past three years, but that fight was above his natural weight class and he was every bit as dominant (or more) as he's ever been.

Jones having only one win in the last 3 and a half years is unfortunately an issue if he wants to be pound-for-pound number one, according to the UFC now.

Also, was that fight above his natural weight class? 205 pounds is no longer his natural weight class. He spent over 2 years bulking up to heavyweight. Even though a significant part of his career was in the 205-pound weight class, the move to heavyweight and the physical adaptation to compete in that weight class suggest a shift in his natural fighting weight.

Jones is a natural heavyweight at this point in his career.

Which heavyweights do you actually think (and I mean actually, not just wishful thinking like people have with Pavlovich) would beat him? And I don't mean which fighters have a "chance," because everyone's got a chance. Which fighters would you actually bet on if they were matched up against Jones?

I don't have enough footage to assess how good Jones is at heavyweight. We've seen him compete for a little over 2 minutes there, so there are fights in which I wouldn't be confident in either fighter winning. A fight against Ngannou or Aspinall would be interesting.

Yes, Gane wasn't in the pound-for-pound rankings, which makes him being ranked at number one at heavyweight sadly weaker than being number one at lightweight, considering the number one ranked lightweight Oliveira was pretty high up there in the PFP rankings as well.

Charles was in the P4P rankings because he was essentially champion going on his 3rd title defence against Islam. Not because he was just the #1 LW. The random #1 LW would never be P4P, just as the random #1 HW wouldn't be.

As I said. They put champs or recent champs there. Charles was that.

Also, why are you not counting the Oliveira win for Makhachev again? A win that was around 12 and a half months ago is conveniently too long now? That's interesting.

I'm not...? It's about the one real win worth giving to Islam as Charles' is actually in his weight class.

Problem is it's literally the only top 5 winner Islam has in his career. Jon has like 17.

Only fought smaller guys.
2 title defences vs a smaller lad (that's two, TWO title defences).
Felled like a tree against a nobody.

Lol.
Lmao even.

Needs at least 5 or 6 concurrent title defences before we can even begin comparisons with real GOAT contenders.

But thanks for playing.
Well Tim Sylvia must be in goat contention in your mind with maybe 6 title defenses at HW where Jones has zero but title defenses only is a terrible way to pick a goat, but you do you .

All Jon Jones has to do is sit on his fat ass for 3 more years then come back, destroy 80 year old Stipe who will happily take the fight even if he is retired by then, then Jones fans, along with the UFC will rank him #1 and goat again.

And we’ll keep ignoring that he lost to Reyes, almost (and maybe did) lose to Santos and Gus, has cheated multiple times and fights every decade.

Seriously, the love for this guy is something I will never understand, at his best he was great but the guy has been nothing but a disappointment and a twitter warrior for years, stayed as far away as possible from the Francis fight until he decided it was time and it just happened to be when Francis contract was going to end, then makes it about Francis being afraid of him? Fights a guy who couldn’t wrestle and submits him to become HW champ and then gets injured and gets out of the HW fight that would have been at least more competitive, while Francis is out there becoming a legend.

Jones takes a lot of losses and his fans just seem to ignore they exist, Dana, his biggest fan even said he lost to Reyes, yet they somehow still say he is the best who has ever donde it?

With Jones, what I like to do is simply forget he exists, pretend he retired a while back and keep his epic victories against Shogun, Machida and DC (even if he cheated) in my heart, I also remember how hard he fought in that last round vs Gus, showing he also had a lot of heart, not just skill, I loved that about him.

then pretend the guy after all that is someone else.

Meanwhile Islam actually has lost, no debate about it.

Don't know why the JJ fans are upset. P4P rankings are very much about recent performances and have very little, if anything, to do with overall legacy. The Gane win was great and Jones deserves a spot, but top spot? That was/would be laughable.

I like you're pretending it wasn't the most dominant performance of the year.

I recognized that it was a great win, no? Still, the reaction of the vast majority of people in the mma sphere was simultaneously ‘wow Jones’ and ‘damn Gane looked clueless on the ground’. Also, it was one great win preceded by years of inactivity, preceded by three flaccid performances.

I'd like to introduce yourself to yourself:

There are people in this thread unironically arguing that Islam is p4p no1.
Let that sink in boys, lol.

Love me some sherdog.

I'd like to introduce yourself to yourself:

are you honestly not getting it? wow... here, let me spell it out for you:

P4P ranking are about how you have looked in your last few fights, not your entire body of work. This is why a single loss, or even failing a PED test can send you down the list.

If you want to compare Jon's 'last few' against his opponents', you have to reach all the way back to Smith, Santos, Reyes ..or else you are comparing his lone fight vs Gane against other p4p fighters' last few. Either way, it's absurd to rank Jones no1 at this time.

As i said u are troll
Jones has had 1 fight in almost 4 years if that makes him eligible for current p4p status throw Anderson Silva and Randy Couture in there too, they fought in the last score of years as well. Haha
