I wouldn't call it wasted; he's fulfilling his potential by using it to coach, train and mentor after getting out while ahead. You can't put a price tag on braincells unless you had none to begin with.

This is a strange answer and likely retarded.

My answer to the question is Jon Jones.

Ive always thought, if he had his shit together, what else could he have accomplished?

Arguably the GOAT despite all the crazy bull shit.
Yeah until he fought someone his size

Magamed did not have shit cardio. He had a medical condition that affected his lungs. Basically a disease that ultimately forced him into retirement. Talent wise, he's as good as they get without the 1 shot power.

Rampage made Jones look very bad striking. Like embarrassingly bad. But revisionist history beer goggles viewers that didn't actually watch the fight live will always just pretend like Jon beat him easily and quickly, he didn't.
I actually watched the fight live. Jones toyed with Shampage, tossed him over his back after one of the rounds ended and finished him. You might want to stop projecting and turn down your bias a bit.

He would have never held UFC gold. Would he be a staple of the div if he stuck around, yes. Would he have gotten a title shot, probably but he wasnt beating Max or Volk.

Some narratives get proven true, and some get proven false. Case by case basis. Just because Khamzat proved he could go 5 rounds and not gas doesn't mean anything in regards to Zabit's situation. Regardless, we'll never find out.
Dillashaw's trainers can do amazing things.

I don't know... a sports betting guy on X (who's also quite philosophical) once said when you step in the cage with Jones, you aren't fighting him, you're fighting his demons. If he were really the clean-cut, Christian, all-American guy he pretended to be, he'd have a much better life outside the cage...but inside it...I don't know. He kind of reminds me of NFL player Lawrence Taylor, who was a major coke addict but somehow managed to be a highly functioning athlete for years....and played like a maniac.

I vote Kelvin
He and Costa come to mind. Both looked like monsters with huge potential around 2018.

I see Erick Silva's name has already been brought up. Once someone mentions Kevin Lee, we can probably close the comments.

Maybe not the biggest waste, but Gregor Gillespie came to the UFC with a strong wrestling background and a lot of hype. He was also like 30 and needed to move quickly up the ranks. Instead he fought sparingly and retired without making a serious attempt at a title run. I know he got KO'd by Kevin Lee whom I just mentioned. But he won his next fight and just stallled....then retired.

You have a terrible memory then

My unpopular opinion(at least on reddit and twitter it is) was always that Zabit was a tad overrated.

People really talked about him like he was already champion with 10 title defences.

Then again this was before we saw the greatness of Volk and Max to their full extent.

I cant count zabit or genki sudo. They wanted to move away from mma.

Fighter should have motivation and discipline so I dont pick talented people with low effort.

I think somebody with wasted potential is somebody who had terrible matchmaking: cain, usman and dare I say...sakuraba

He was very particular about who he would fight...got offered a few but wouldn't fight anyone ranked below him. Wasn't that into it so he went off the grid fishing with TJ Grant and Arona. He could have been a real contender though.

Gregor G. hanging out on the beaches of Brazil with 12's, surfing and fishing, giving the occasional seminar.

TJ is miming somewhere in Canada.

I don't have a specific name, but the UFC is generally super rough on prospects. There are quite a few guys out there that could have had a much bigger and better impact on the sport and their careers if more care had been taken with matchups.

Was cool to watch but when a fighter and his camp state that they don't want 5 round fights, its not a good sign.

Speaking of Arona (someone I haven't thought about in a long time), I hope no one mentions him. He lost 3 of his last 4 fights in Pride, then didn't look very good when he came back a couple of years later to fight Marvin Eastman (his final fight). From time to time, people would make threads about him coming to the UFC, sometimes saying he'd be a tough opponent for Jones. Nah. He'd peaked already. His ship had sailed, so he moved on to surfing.
