I do consider combat sport first and foremost sports.

A LOT of people in US live in shitholes and face violence or threats on daily basis.
Usually, they protect themselves with guns.

What happens in BJJ communities in USA is this:
BJJ is expensive sport and attracts a bit wealthier crowd, that lives in different social environment, creating completely different view on the world, problems and solutions.

Thats fine, but it doesnt doesnt the fact, that a sport will not save you from experienced attacker.

Technical aspect of grappling combat techniques have not changed since medieval times.

Not rarerly by street fight is assumed bar brawl with drunk white collar engineer or just unlicensed bout 1 vs 1 where two guys with notice are stepping and start closing distance like in ring. With clear previous knowledge that fight will start out.

sport will not save you from experienced attacker

Might save if person is also street wise. Might not save.
The better self defense training a person have, the lesser chip on his shoulder and some things that must be known for sport must be known also for self defense. With additions of course.

Sport teaches how dangerous is to underestimate opponent.
Self defense adds to this also : newer believe that you will be noticed in any manner and there's will be 1 vs 1 from beginning till end.

A good self defense is street wise and teaches what NOT to do. What might happen a few days later after brawl cos revenge too exists.
