I just came back from a friends place. Topic of choice today was "woke" movies. Now even though I agreed with much of what was said, I began to think to myself....

What would make people happy when it came to roles that people played?

For example. The movie Wicked came out with a pretty diverse cast. I believe one of the witches is portrayed by a person of color who is also lesbian. The hate was strong. Now....even though I would probably never watch this, I began to question some of the backlash. I mean, shes playing a green witch...the supposed wicked one no less. So...wtf is the big deal? Id kinda understand if the lesbian black chick was playing the good witch...the right would lose their minds. This however left me scratching my head.

It seems nowadays, anytime a person of color, lgbtq, a woman or God forbid, all of the above gets a lead role, its woke. Wtf defines woke now? Its confusing. I thought it was people that specifically tried to make films confronting certain social issues. Could be a movie about a female black detective....woke.

Some of it I get it....i dont want the message smeared in my face with political or social commentary. Meanwhile, im left scratching my head sometimes thinking why people are so pissed at a specific movie.

Odd times.

Man children legit throw a temper-tantrum if a female video game character in a post-apocalyptic game isn't hot enough for them. It's loony. Just try to ignore them and consume whatever entertainment you like without them yapping in your ear about bullshit.

I think it's pretty much lost whatever meaning it ever had and that anti-woke has made an entire business grifting off of what is largely a boogie man.

Social and political messaging has always been in entertainment. As times and the culture has changed, so has that messaging. Aliens and Terminator 2 were hugely feminist films (with loads of political messaging... Hemm, "Colonial Marines", Sarah's lecture about men destroying everything, etc), no one cared cuz they're awesome and - lets be real - a lot of people probably didn't catch the messaging. Black Panther exists because Stan Lee didn't see enough black super heroes. X-Men I think was supposed to be about civil rights. The Rebels in SW were analogous to the Vietcong. So forth.

Today though, because there's some people who can be obnoxious about identity and companies will openly talk about diversity or virtue signal it's given birth to this "anti-woke" reactionary nonsense. Is there bad entertainment with whatever agenda? Yes. Is this new? No. Neither is intentional diversity in media.

I think a lot of people don't how much shit they like is political. Fucking Paul Ryan told a member of Rage Against The Machine that he needed to "not be so political" or however he phrased it lmao.

In particular, I am not a fan of changing the race of a main character for the sole reason to inject diversity into a role. It really pisses me off when it is based upon a book I read multiple times. For example, in Dr sleep, the little girl with all the powers is abra stone and she is desribed as a blonde girl and in the movie, she is black. Regardless, I loved the movie and think it does an excellent job, including the black girl playing abra-but initially, it oissed me off.

The book the passage by Justin Cronin has a little girl with powers named Amy and she is described as being white with dark hair and in the series, she is black. I just hate when you read a book multiple times (just finished listening to it in audio book a few weeks ago and I am working my way through the second book now) and you get a picture in your head and they take that picture and the source material and throw it out the fucking window for the reasons of a diverse cast.

Superman with a black actor?

It happens all the time, except making a black character white-that won’t happen like it did with black face and no movie that did that should be taken seriously. Hell, there was huge controversy over making tilda swinton the ancient one in Dr strange and there is even a name for it-white washing while in the same movie they changed an Asian dude in the source material for a black guy in the movie but there were no cries of black washing

It's fucking tiring hearing about it from both sides honestly, I take the same approach as the dude above who said just watch what you want and fuck anyone else.

I do however like the irony of the perpetually online always-first-to-respond-in-the-war-room posters in here unironically using the phrase "perpetually online losers"

Back when leftists were using the word "woke" unironic it never applied to representation in media. It meant you were awake or not asleep and understood societys problems. Today the right hijacked the word and made it mean identity politics basically.

Right wingers generally have a sense of ownership over their hobbies and their main cultural impulse is to want things to stay the same and when said hobbies change in any way their instinct is to resist that. This has created specific brand of outrage coming from people whose entire life revolves around their hobbies. Even hobbies you'd traditionally consider to more left leaning have their right wingers who think its their property being appropriated.

I also think many people are unaware of the whole anger industrial complex on YT fanning the flames of this without which this would be an "old man yells at cloud" sort of issue thats always existed. Theres dozens of channels for every hobby you can think of constantly bitching about representation in that respective space. People who otherwise wouldn't be mad sees a video telling them "your favorite show is being ruined by going WOKE" and before you've known it they have a whole storyline in their head about how female, black and/or alphabet actors are the main villians of society.

While some of it is organic much of it isn't its the result of click farming. I think most of the late 2010s 2020s cultural issues that popped up out of nowhere are the result of click farming. People getting people angry to get clicks and ad revenue. Its like Fox News except now your angry uncle isn't a viewer anymore he's a little Rupert Murdoch and instead of politics hes doing it about nerd shit.

Perpetually online alt-right losers bitch and moan about anything.

Anything not "straight, white, male" is DEI/Woke etc.. these people don't have normal social lives
I like to know what they F do they do for a living to complain all the time? My other social media account that's all I see crazy. Like they just stay on their phone all day an bitch. Then they wonder why billionaires think they are not productive enough lol.

The right "hijacked" the word? The word was originally used by right wing conspiracy theorists, probably originating from The Matrix to signify people who chose to wake up from the Matrix. The left were the ones who hijacked the word and associated it with extreme progressivism.

Woke people are in reality the most disrespectful people in society.

They will wave Palestinian flags whilst being openly gay, a crime so frowned upon in Palestine that it’s punishable by death. You wouldn’t superimpose a pig onto a Palestine flag so don’t wave it as a gay person.

They will bang the drum for Ukraine, then ditch it as soon as a more fashionable flag comes along - subsequently leaving Ukrainian refugees hapless, because governments are now under no pressure to adequately provide for them.

They will hold perfectly legal minorities up as reason to why we need open borders for no other reason that they aren’t white, so woke people view them as illegals.

By "extreme progressivsm" you mean rightwing capitalism with rainbow flag and BLM signage.

If anyone had the word before the left it was black activists in a more general sense upset about police brutality.

Yes people waking up from the Matrix is a right wing concept. This makes sense somehow.

It's hard to say these days. Back when media got the best person for the role, no one cared if a person was black or not. Unfortunately the biggest investment companies that control everything decided to push what they themselves label DEI on everyone and put trillions of dollars to that goal. Larry Fink (CEO of Black Rock) said they had to use money to force people to change their behaviors in terms of DEI (this changed a little bit recently since DEI investing loses so much money). People don't like to be socially programmed by billionaires. Also people don't like blatantly racist and sexist policies.

And the true test of if you think this is no big deal is if you think every piece of media should have a few characters preaching about Christianity and how amazing it is. Because I remember a time in media where most had some hamfisted message about how you should become a Christian. And I also remember many people on the left finding that annoying. Which it was.

So unless you are okay seeing Jesus gospel in every movie, show, game, etc. because Black Rock or State Street has an investment initiative to push Christianity, I don't think this is a position these people truly hold. Because it is the same thing, just that the left now holds most of the power in media.

None of what you described is woke. Woke is injecting ridiculous left wing social justice ideology into the movie that does nothing to advance the plot. This used to be done as satire (see PCU made in 1994). The movie was ahead of its time foreseeing how looney leftwing academic and political culture was to become.

A prime example would be the latest season of Fargo. Of course they have to make the antagonist not only a trump supporter, but to comment on how great a man he is. GTFO

When woke was a serious term it was used to describe people aware of racial injustice, but it isn’t used that way anymore. What woke has become just makes a mockery of that.
