Is this true? Mac Danzig on greasing before a fight

Cheating is cheating. If it is against the rules, then it is cheating. Would BJ have won the fight if GSP didn't grease? No. However, cheating is cheating. Just because the outcome wouldn't have changed, doesn't change the action itself.

Actually, I think it makes GSP look worse. He cheated in a fight that he would have dominated no matter what. What does that say about his confidence in himself? Also, what does that say about him as a person? I think it's funny that people hate BJ for "making excuses", but they have no problem with the perosn that actually broke the rules.

I would have more of a problem with him if people saying that "GSP is a cheater" had more than a few gifs of some incidental contact from gsp's face to his shoulders, and a dissertation from Mac Danzig on the issue. You'll have to give us much more than that, before we bust out the pitch-forks and torches and go after GSP for 'cheating.'

I had a top level fighter tell me about an old wrestling trick that he knew some guys use. Basically it involved taking a very hot shower and rubbing yourself down with baby oil. He said it worked great if you did it the morning before a fight.

I think its bad, but on the same level as grabbing the fence or kicking the groin, things which many fighters do without creating the same fuss - in fact some fighters have a pattern of hitting the groin or even the eyes without receiving more than passing criticism for it.

Though on reflection, Fedor took as much criticism for grabbing the ropes in his fight with Linland as GSP's receiving (ironic in that case since Linland used the ropes first, to get Fedor into the corner).

To a certain extent, I think people criticize infractions done by people they expect to win (Fedor, GSP) more than those done by underdogs (Kongo's repeated groin shots against Crocop were basically ignored).

Oiling the body is pretty hard to quantify - its usually not done blatantly (ie corner doing it in plain sight with lot's of cameras recording), which in fact suggests that its possible that GSP's camp didn't pre-oil ... why put on vaseline in such an obvious way if he was pre-oiled anyway?

a few good points guys, here are mine:

if you're not supposed to grab the ropes/cage, what's it there for? why doesn't ufc start using that big circle platform ala WCL? oh yeah, because of our wrestling bias, fair enough.

but, see, rope/fence grabbing is discouraged for the sake and safety of the fighter doing the grabbing right? it doesn't necessarily give you an advantage, at least not an advantage that the other fighter doesn't have.

greasing is something completely different. it's done to gain an unfair advantage over your opponent. it's done to alter the dynamic of the fight. was BJ outclassed? absolutely. but the question remains: was his high guard ineffective because of georges' size and strength advantage, or because he was too slippery?

i say let them rematch, ala sakuraba and akiyama. georges even offered to do rashguards.

hell, you know what'd be ever more sweet? let them wear gis.

Styles-You may be able to confuse most of the people on here with your vocabulary and backwards logic, but not in this case.

The Vaseline was applied to the shoulders, which does affect the fight if the opponent likes to play a high guard. What does BJ use when he is on his back? Oh yea, high guard and rubber guard. Vaseline on the shoulders wouldn

no, you're not supposed to grab the fence. the purpose of the fence is to keep fighters inside the octagon (duh.....). other solutions force more restarts, and the octagon was never meant "to favor wrestlers", stop with that bullshit.

and of course grabbing the fence gives you an advantage... it makes it harder for your opponent to take you down. (again, duh...)

Gold Bond can be applied to your skin and then make you greasy when you sweat it out.

I remember around the time of the Diego - Diaz fight, this was what they were accusing Sanchez of.

Towel the guys off between rounds would be a start.

I don't think this is anything new. I've never really understood them greasing the face in MMA, in boxing they say they do it to prevent cuts, but in mma most elbows are thrown with the intention of cutting the opponent, if they are worried about fights ending because of cuts they shouldn't allow elbows...?

Then again you have some guys who are just slick/slippery naturally..?

I remember on TUF one of the guys who fought shonie carter saying the guy was super slippery and he wanted them to towel him off. Then in a later fight carter fights marcus davis and davis then comments on how slippery carter is. Some would draw the conclusion carter is greasing, but i disagree since i doubt he'd be able to pull that off on the reality show without some sort of drama.

Vaseline isn't there to prevent cuts. There's no such thing as cut prevention short of using The Ticks "Not in the face" mantra. It's to lower the chances of cuts, which is does. Basically by making the face slightly slippery, you hope the punches slide across the face instead of ripping at tout skin (which would make one cut easier).

It won't stop (prevent) cuts, but it will lessen the chances of one. We've seen it so many times. Stitch will vaseline someone's face before they get into the cage. Then Vitor beats on Marvin Eastman's face or BJ will elbow Joe Daddy. It's not gonna stop it, but I reckon it's a good thing or else we'd probably have even more fights ending in cuts.

If he broke the rules, he broke the rules. However, I don't see the fight being changed to a NC. However, I do see a pretty significant fine for Phil Nurse and Greg Jackson if they are found guilty

Some people are just naturally slippery. I know because I'm one of them.

I piss sweat. During warm-ups, when everyone else is only slightly flushed I've already got a pool of sweat around me. It's just genetic, I'm 170 pounds, 5'11 and I train 10 hours a week so I'm not a fatty fatty getting into shape.

By the time we roll, my sweat has literally become a lather. I can see fu*king bubbles man, it's gross.

I've researched it, and there's nothing I can do about it. Supposedly it's quite common amongst people with different parts of the body being affected. For me it's mostly my upper back, face and chest so I guess it helps my game.

I've trained with Shonie Carter a few times and he was always slippery. It was definitely a body lotion or something. He always had a few lady friends hanging around and was all about looking fresh when he went out.

I don't think it's quite as prominent anymore

Just makes me remember Danzig. He seemed like he'd fight for gold one day. Very memorable fighter
Idk. The first time I saw him, he got smashed by past his prime Sakurai.

Same….. its like wringing a sponge. Everytime someone squeezes me, it seeps out of every pore.
