is the word 'cracker' racist?

I never come to the War Room because, well, seriously. I just came to see if the "rape culture" thread got moved here, and saw this.

From a sociological point of view, in Western nations, racism doesn't exist towards the oppressor. There are valid reasons to dislike or even "hate" white people that have nothing to do with race. Racism is the feeling that your race is superior to another on a biological level. Black people don't hate white people because they're white. They hate white people due to the oppression of their race over a long period of time. The term "cracker" in reference isn't racist because their are various and valid reasons other than race that black people hate white people for.

There isn't a valid reason for any race to hate any race. Hate should only be applied to individuals. Are you saying that there is no such thing as a racism towards white people? Or if there is it is somehow justified based on what other people have done years ago. Acting as if blacks were the only race ever enslaved and they were only enslaved by white people. How is any phrase that is meant to try to offend any race not racist?

If someone called me a cracker I wouldn't be able to stop self from laughing.

If the N word is then so is the C word. They are both used as a racially discriminating insult. Either both are or neither are. That's my opinion not that it matters any.

Nah, not for me. I think "white boy" or "white shit" is much more offensive.

I would probably get violent, if someone called me that. :icon_chee

It depends on the intention.

Also, its interesting to point out that the word Slavery comes from the word Slav or Slavic who were a group of white people enslaved by the Romans.

The origin remains controversial. Besides Romans had much more celtic and german slaves, wouldn't it be logical to call their slaves German or Gauls or something.

Just saying....

Source? I've never read that the history of the word is controversial. As far as I've read its pretty clear the word Slave comes from the word Slave or more accurately Sclavus.

"Slavs became slaves around the beginning of the ninth century when the Holy Roman Empire tried to stabilize a German-Slav frontier." http://www.thefreedictionary.com/slave

The bigger point I was making is that all cultures, including whites, have been subjected to slavery throughout the history of the world.

Given my German ancestry I demand reparations from the Romans. The fact that my German ancestors were slaves is probably the reason I can't get my life together.

I think Caucasian is pretty racist, in the same way Negro is now generally frowned on. Cracker is on the same level as Ni99er.

why is caucasian racist?
is anything that refers to, or highlights race, racist?

Obviously I wouldn't equivocate it to the n-bomb. I wouldn't even equivocate to lesser epithets like c*** or spearchucker. It's not until you get into the more obscure epithets like "spook" that it finds its equivalents, but it is undoubtedly a racist disparagement.

A more interesting word for the poll, IMO, would have been "honky". That is also used as an epithet, but originally it was a word used by southern whites to describe guys who enjoyed the honky-tonks, and that's still valid.

Well its meant to be a racial slur so, yeah, its racist.
But I would actually laugh if anybody called me a cracker with any legitimate bad intentions. I don't find it insulting.

You would laugh because cracker hasnt been ingrained in your psyche as an affront to your entire being the way the n word has for african americans.

Yes. But I'm standing on my tippy toes awaiting for Possum Jenkins to defend the usage of the word.

Yes it is a race related term, and it is wrong to call someone a cracka/cracker. But it is funny that people try to use it as an insult. It is similar to calling someone white bread, but I would say it(cracka)is meant to be less offensive. Calling someone white bread is usually followed by bitch.

The last time I was called either, I laughed, and thanked the person, offering that I thought it was cute they thought that would offend me. In truth, the attempt to offend me was offensive, but me non-reaction really set the person off.

Now, when someone calls me cracka, I will respond "Thankyu, and yes, I am the boss".

this is not a hate thread
don't turn it into one...

recently someone posted the word cracker
a fellow poster called it racist
wondering why it wasn't censored if ****** is

this sparked the question...
"is the word cracker racist?"

for
it's a derogatory term towards white people
any derogatory term towards a race is racist
no racism should stand

Calling a middle eastern person "terrorist" is only offensive to them if they feel guilty about terrorism.

Yeah that logic works.

Depends on it's followed by "ass cracka". Need clarification here

Slavic historians and some german Etymologisches.

They basically saying that The Greek word for slave (later used in all of Europe) is a derivative of the Greek verb skyle

Yes, I read that.

Yes, but it hasn't been polled, and that poll is actually interesting because the outcome isn't a foregone conclusion.
