Is the Sopranos worth it now?

It gets better the older you are, so yes

The younger you are the more you want bang bang cool action scenes, and the Sopranos does'nt offer much of that

The older you get the more you are interested in dynamics between characters, human/society nature, unsaid but implied stuff, strategic/street smart shit and Sopranos does that much more
I agree. I loved it when I was 17 for the hits and the tits. But at 36, I'll really enjoy everything- even those Carmela-centric episodes where she struggles with her morality.

One of the early episodes I liked was on the road for Meadow's college.
Tomy saw a rat took and care of him.
Meadow asks Tony if he is in the Maffia.

Wife and I first watched it a couple of months ago, we are starting round 2 now…

GoT, Shield, Justified, love at first sight, survivor and love is blind are all better…Sopranos is a very racist series much like The Godfather movies

It's a singular show. You would be correct if he was referring to a group of sopranos, as in female singers with high voices. But not when referring to a show called The Sopranos.
It seems like there are more than one Soprano in the show however. Correct? Hey, if I’m wrong, I’m wrong. No shame here

Probably why the show is so good.

Funny, i hear this a lot yet i dont hold it in high esteem.
I'm with you. It was quality indeed and seeing them survive on ketchup was hilarious but I don't hold it as high. That said, I can't really think of an episode I like more.

Sopranos is flippin fantastic. I didn't want the first season as it aired, just bought the VHS and was hooked immediately. I even have a Bada Bing shirt.

@dc007 you know straight we would hole up together for a week and see no one other than DoorDash.

I was pretty young when the Sopranos was the biggest thing on tv so I missed out on all the fun. I keep saying I'm gonna watch it but sadly I'm a binge watcher And the thought of binging all 86 episodes of this show makes me feel exhausted.

But is it worth it? How well does it hold up after more than 20 years from its start?

Yes do it it’s awesome

My favorite episode was the one where Paulie and Christopher get lost in the woods.
Watching the series for the first time and literally just watched that episode. Paulie is fuckin hilarious, always has the best zingers. That damn Russian is a unit.

Ive only seen like the first season and a little of the second but i thought it started out well enough and ive heard the first season isnt the best from those who do enjoy it maybe buy some gatorades before you start viewing TS

The Sppranos came out at the beginning of HBO'S rise to being an original programming powerhouse; not sure how the show would fare now.

I was finished binge-watching all of it a month ago. Watched some of it when it came out. It’s pretty good. It’s not the greatest, but sometimes pretty good is all you can find on the tube.

No IMO.

Super weak final season and ending. The dream sequences are just fucking stupid also.

Really brings down the whole series and makes it age very poorly.

As a huge Sopranos fan Ill be objective about my likes and criticisms:

- It does a lot of things differently than modern shows which is engaging.

-do not go into it expecting an epic drama like Breaking Bad or GoT. It is a very unique genre and it is almost episodic with no real villain or overarching goal.
The best way I can describe it is a Dark Comedy/Drama pseudo-sitcom.

-The show dissects psychology very well and accurately portrays the mental gymnastics people go through to justify their character flaws.

-the acting is amazing especially Edie Falco and James Gandolfini

-The drama is very good as well

-The dialogue is well-thought out and also funny.

As for its flaws:

-The production value does not hold up. A lot of really moments, even a character who's actor passes away during the series is CGI deepfaked onto another actors face for a scene. A lot of the guns used are comically bad props.

-There is a lack of realism when it comes to the crime behavior. I'd argue that the show can get away with it though because its more of a deconstruction of the mob genre rather than taking itself seriously as a mob show.

-Season 1 is allow, season 2 is better but season 3 onward are amazing.

now is it worth it?

absolutely

I finished my first run through about a month ago - at age 42 I wish I'd have watched it before now! For me, its the best TV series I've ever watched and I loved every minute. Looking back Season 1 was slow as the built the characters and story but at the time I had no basis for comparison. Well worth a watch and I'll definitely be revisiting it again in the not too distant future
