Is serving in the military a noble profession?

Not that anybody gives a shit, but here's my two cents as a combat vet:

Serving your country/people/military is very noble imo. However, inherently, you are a servant of your people/government/whatever and will likely be asked to do things that you feel morally ambiguous about. That's part of that service though, and you need to be ok with that going in to the job. A lot of people never consider that.

From my perspective I'm doing the dirty work that is necessary to make my people/tribe/whatever better than any other one around me so that others don't have to. I strongly feel that stealing and killing are morally wrong. However, I'll happily do both if the betterment of my people requires it. Not everyone is going to feel that way, and that's fine.

Personally I feel national service should be a requirement, though I don't think that necessarily means military service. We should let people serve at places like the post office and doing infrastructure construction projects. Any kind of public service really. It's important that people feel a part of their country, their people, and like they have invested something in that.

Society has gotten so narcissistic anymore. Even in the Coast Guard where thd primary duty is to save lives, you still get those E and O nothings who can't comprehend that they have to start from the bottom, they are not special, and your superiors don't owe you a reason "why" all the time....

...I'd rather have people that truly want to be there.

I agree and have said that for years as well. Trouble is, too many only want their government and country to help them but they don't want to do anything to help their government or country. It's just gimme, gimme, gimme.

No. We aren’t at war and the military offers more benefits than most jobs.

It also demands more. Even in peacetime or a non-combat role.

Ya and it offers more as compensation. You end up with housing subsidies, childcare allowance, tax and duty free groceries, some of the best health insurance possible, GI bill, military discounts..

No one would sign up if it wasn’t a good deal.

Noble as in second son, but noble as in moral? Don't be fucking ridiculous.

The only just war is defensive war, if you're in USA or UK it's been offensive war for decades or centuries.

It would only be just to serve in a defence force not an offence force so regarding modern standing armies it can't be. This is like Northen raiders asking if being a viking could be considered truly nobel.

Yes, I agree for the most part.

How about WWII? Was that a true noble war in a sense?
No, the English were the only ones to engage on principle, but that's a lie, they were protecting their shipping routes by preventing Germany getting ports on the north of Europe.

It's always just for economic reasons, there's no great morals in international affairs. That's the lie and flag these people making money off the poor dress themselves in.
