I'm not a fan of him as a person but he cleaned out the division of the old school and beat all the top contenders he had until he got banned. So yeah right now I would say he is.
Pettis too, at one point.
P4P is not a career achievement recognition.
It's about the 'present'/'recent' status.
P4P is a measure of the better fighter, regardless of size. And the complexion of the wins factor in as well as P4P is a measure of skill. Pettis at least did show his prowess in striking and BJJ in his brief impressive run. Conor's streak while impressive were limited in display of the facets in MMA. Not that discounts him, rather other P4P candidates showing a vast array of skill and adaptability like a Jones or MM should be valued more highly.
Now here we are with Conor being bested on the feet and outgrappled in a LW fight with no real water weight cut between either man. His stock P4P-wise dropped somewhat with most, as did Pettis, as did Barao, as did Weidman, and other supposed P4P# 1 that were suggested to be over guys like Jones/Aldo/MM.
His last couple fights went into decision, but he didnt showcase anything worthy remembering.
The only good fight I remember was with Rua for belt...
Yea of course Gus one was good too, but it was only good because of the back and forth touch to it. No fancy moves, spinning back fists and so on.
When he beats Cormier I would love to see him going to HW.
Not sure about P4P(until he fights the top HWs), but he is the most dominant fighter in MMA at the moment imo.

Skill is only one facet that plays a part in how good a fighter is.
Skill-for-Skill is something else.
