is "mob rule" good or bad?

"democracy is the most vile form of government, where 51% of the population may strip the rights of the remaining 49." James Madison

reign of terror in france was also another form of mob rule. though, just because it failed in one instance does not mean that it will in all of its potential forms.

hi OldGoat,

if four out of five people support the idea of conceal and carry permits being valid from coast to coast across state lines, shouldn't such a measure pass?

if 80% of the nation supports the Universal Conceal and Carry Reciprocity Act, do you agree that 20% of the nation should be able to block it?

what is your opinion?

Since I believe in restrained government and individual liberties my thought process errs on the side of if you don't have the definite grant of a power for a government you cannot deny someone something.

So first we need to answer if this is in the scope of the powers granted to the gubmint? If it is than it's up to the 80% to elect officials that will implement their will in legal fashion. If it is not, than change the mechanisms of how the government may or may not act to address this issue. If they cannot change those mechanisms than I don't really care what the 80% think.
