Is Max Holloway embarrassed by BJ Penn?

Max never seems to name drop BJ. It's curious because they're both from a small island where BJ is a local legend. I don't expect Max to badmouth BJ so it could be a situation where if you cant say anything good, don't say anything at all.

Max is probably embarrassed for Hawaii that BJ is/was the face of MMA for the island. That BJ is not repping Hawaii properly both in the cage and out.

Perhaps BJ is resentful that Max is now the best fighter from the island ever. Max may not have the same cult following but performance wise he has already surpassed BJ.

Yes, I saw the video of their joint interview. They were praising each other. I would not expect otherwise especially from a pre-champ Max who was all of 23 years old.

Bro, get a map. BJ is from a big island, Max is 4 islands away on O'ahu.

They are not both from the same small island, they literally live on different islands.

BJ is from Hilo on the Big Island and Max is from Honolulu on the island of Oahu.

You fly on an airplane to get between those places.

Max is west side, not Honolulu. Not same smell.

Please. Nick Diaz beat the fucking brakes off of BJ just walking him down

That was a past his prime BJ, even though he was still a very competent fighter. Diaz also had some of the best pressure in the history of MMA, and he still didn't finish BJ in under two. In fact, BJ actually won the first round.

Gracie Technics / Legacy Muay Thai in Honolulu, what am I missing?

Are you talking about where he went to high school etc?

That’s true but BJ spends plenty of time on Oahu. Him and Max likely know each other through the fight scene there. That flight is also like 20 minutes long, it’s basically a bus ride

He's proud of Canada, and we're proud of him.

Canada's #1 UFC fighter.

I know a lot of Hawaiians in my state. Many of them are assholes. Not some laid back island brahs.

This is the weirdest stereotype of all time.

Hawaiians are angry violent people.

Understandably, to be honest. Colonialism fucked them over big time. But man, locals/natives HATE Americans and aren't afraid to be real dickheads about.

Sorry fellas, but your tiny island paradise got rekt by American interests.

Hawaii is the most remote island chain in the world.

A non-stop flight from here in New York to Hawaii is just shy of 11 hours in the air.

It is unsurprising people from America (or anywhere) are not familiar with its geography if they've never visited. What is surprising is in the information age, someone doesn't want to take 30 seconds to google it.
It's the same breed of people who ask general questions in face book posts. Like fucking google it ya turd, the fuck.

You're on a computer or phone so why not pop 'Honolulu to hilo flight' in google and see that its 35 minutes in air. Presumably you've flown before and know you have to board and taxi on both sides, so its going to take you a few hours to make this trip, and a few hundred bucks.

It is very specifically not like a bus ride.

Either way, people who live a plan ride apart on different islands and more than a decade difference in age don't bring each other up apropos of nothing. Back when BJ was relevant in MMA, Max spoke highly of him when asked.

Prime BJ would have never lost to Porier, let alone twice.

Let’s see where Max is after another 15 years of fighting
Lmao BJ never win more than 4 in a row

I feel like with BJ, the younger you go, the better he was.

Like peak BJ was him smashing Uno.

He was just pure talent. The more he tried to discipline himself and be a “fighter” the worse he got.

The problem with pure talent is that when it runs into things it can’t overcome, it usually stops trying pretty quick, because everything before was so easy.

I feel like that kind of perfectly sums up BJ and his whole career: just pure, wild talent that got couldn’t be focused without damaging it. And that when it ran into real obstacles, didn’t have the will or tools to overcome them.

Really he’s kind of living tragedy in his own broken way.

Why would he be, are they direct relatives or something? Guy I lived near and lab partnered with in middle school just got charged for murder, certainly dosen't embarass me in any way cause we're from the same small region.

just because two people are from the same place, that doesn't mean they have to be friends or respect each other.

I’m pretty sure leading up to the Edgar fight he said he was to get Redemption for Hawaii by beating Edgar for taking Penns belt. Was on the countdown show.

I didn’t look it up on the, I lived in Hawaii and took that same flight several times. I also know BJ traveled between them a lot. Honolulu airport was a pain in the ass but coming and going from the Hilo/Kona airports was almost no extra headache at all. In fact my wife did fly between the islands for work for a single days work and back pretty frequently

Aren't Hawaiians gutter trash anyway? Guys like BJ fighting in bars in Hawaii is so common its normal behavior.

He's probably not condemning BJ because it's not exactly outlandish behavior from where he comes from.

Yes. Get Titas in Waianae can give Max dirty lickins. I'm sure Max is a product of the Waianae boxing club, of course he trains in everything, but 10 to 1 thats where he started. Kaneohe boxing club here. Those guys were always tough.

STFU. Hawai'ians voted for statehood.
