Is Judo effective in a streetfight?

Karo would have KO'ed those guys he uchi mata'ed if they would have fought on concrete

especially diego landing head first

yes its very effective, the fact that you have to learn how to manipulate the gi translates real well to real life in case someone trying to fight you is wearing a jacket and belt and use that against them, I've always pictured pinning someone against a wall and then just throwing the shit out of them

There was a thread not long ago about a guy who judo threw a punk out of his store. It was legendary but I can't find the link now...

So yes, it is effective in a streetfight.

Even just from a defensive point of view Judo is wonderful. It should allow you to control where the fight takes place. And as people have said, a good throw onto concrete is almost too effective.

I think it is a great weapon if someone is wearing a jacket or something you can easily grab it and throw them as if they had a gi on. Also the ground game may not be nearly as advanced as bjj but a judoka can still easily get a dominant position on the average person.

That's actually kinda my issue with judo in a streetfight. Not that it's not effective--it is--but that the judoka has little control over how badly the other guy will get injured.

Thats why you follow the guy to the ground after the throw. Then its a matter of how badly do you want him hurt.

Yeah I think that thread is gone. I looked for it too.

You're forgetting that judokas are physically unable to punch or kick... :icon_lol:

Wow don't tell me that the legendary store judo fight thread got deleted or something???

Any wrestling experience helps. You'd be surprised how much people don't know when it comes to ground fighting.

See, this shows how wrong you are.

Go over to bullshido.net and go to their striking forums.

Tell them that everyone knows how to throw a punch, that its common sense.

Tell me how that goes for you.

Bulshido.com is a website filled with computer geeks and other social retards. The amount of rubbish they talk over there is incredible. It's worse than here sometimes. Have you actually seen any of the guys from their get-togethers (Throwdowns) ? They are crap. With all of the advice and academia those guys give on martial arts, anyone would think they are highly trained fighters. But when I see footage of their throwdowns, I see a pack of wannabe's. Nothing really impressive so who cares what they think.

Back to the original point. Judo is VERY effective. Pound of pound it is one of the most effective martial arts one can do. One of the most dangerous aswell. I still do wrestling and no gi BJJ of coarse so I don't like training with a grappling gi. But even then I tried my hand out at Judo. I had the benefit of meeting an Olympic Judo fighter aswell as a guy on the national squad. Man, these guys are lethel wepons. They could pick anyone up and slam anyone. Most people have no idea about the finer points of wrestling. If a Judo player grabs you, watch out. Because you are going head first into the floor. I hate training with a gi but even then, I can respect Judo for the fighters it produces.

judo, or most any martial art, could be useful in a street altercation. the techniques would have to be used correctly of course.

Judo can be very effective in the street, IF, you are comfortable taking/throwing a punch. If you approach a guy in a fight on the street the way you would in a judo fight you will get clocked really bad. You should mix it with some striking arts. You see I hate fighting on the street, just the thought of it scares me. Just the thought of trading blows with someone on the street and blood and UGGHHHH..... just rattles me. I am such a softey when ity comes to that shit. I haven't been in a street fight my entire life. I do anything to avoid them. I have done Judo for 7 years(at a very shitty club though), even though I have done decent in tournmaents and beaten green/blue belts from some of the best dojo's in the province I still have no confidence on the street. I have put Judo on hold and started tae kwon do and boxing at very respectible clubs. Both clubs have some tough fighters(provincial and national champs). I haven't sparred yet. But I figured sparring with 200 plus pound hard hitting guys will toughen me up and make me more confident on the street. I also want to do some amateur boxing fights and tae kwon do tournaments.

Just my 2 cents

LMAO @ tae kwon do being better for street fighting than judo, seriously dude what planet do you live on??

there was a guy at ED with dislocate shoulder.

he got involved in a fight while out drinking with his friends.. apparently got into an argument with some guy (obvioulsy someone who practices judo)

this other guy, just grabbed him and threw him with harai goshi...

the guy got knocked out for few minutes and came to the ED for a treatment...

all I can say is

JUDO SAIKO!!!!!

Being Canadian, let me tell you that Judo is kickass when you have winter coats to grab onto. Throws that use a gi can easily by adapted to a heavy jacket. Nothing says "Don't touch me, mother fucker!" like getting Ippon'd through icy cold parking lot concrete.

We don't all live in subtropical climates, ya' know!

Like I said in another thread about this. Go up to a Judo guy and ask him to throw you on to concrete and let me know how you feel when you wake up. Plus most fights end up in some sort of clinch anyway.
