Is it bad to hit a bag bare knuckle

IMO, bag gloves or mma glove, protect your hand from breaking is minimal with out wrapping. and then even if your hand are still wrapped and your trainng real hard you can break your hand. but IMO, if you know how too punch you should not have a problm, and punching with no gloves will condition you hand for a real fight. I dident start using gloves until I was really training. but the man reason too use gloves it that when you punch at the bag and you miss but catch the bag a little bit it will take you knuckle skin right off, and will take a while tooheal and will sting. just get some 40 dollor mma gloves, there small and easy too put on and IMO are better than bag gloves for heavy bags. but if you get boxing gloves make sure you get wraps with them they go hand and hand because of the aquward postion they put your thumb.

Get some 16 oz gloves. Will save your hands and make the bag last longer.

Hitting the bag bareknuckle will help. Just dont punch wrong and I probably wouldnt hit the heavybag like that. Maybe a light bag. They make bags out of this cloth that you fill up with pinto beans. Cant remember the name but they are extremely light, strong and help condition your hands. I also hit it with my elbow for the same reason.

I like to have the school of thought of erring on the side of caution, I mean it takes no time to toss on a pair of bag gloves, or give your hands a wrapping- why risk injuring yourself needlessly?

Unless you've been conditioning your hands and preparing them, you'll probably hurt something if you hit a heavy bag hard without gloves. If you've been doing some sort of conditioning training for your knuckles (some TMAs do this) and if you take time to work up to hard punching, it is possible.

Having said that, if you are going to throw hooks or uppercuts at all, or anything else other than hitting directly at the bag in front of you with straight punches, you will need wraps. Kyokushin karateka, and many other TMAists punch bareknuckle, but they mostly use straight punches. Heavy punching without wraps will mess up your wrists.

And just going and punching a heavy bag with full power just like that will probably mess up your knuckles.

Evaluate your goals and go with them.

The skin is too thin. They will always tear up.

Do you like walking around in pain? It hurts like hell to have them opened up. They don't heal fast either.

Yeah but you walk around thinkin you are cool with bloody knuckles. My trainer always says not to punch the heavy bag hard because you can get nerve damage in your hands. Whne you stop punching the bag your hands are kinda shakin that is nerve damage. But feel free to boot the shit outta the bag as hard as you want

I believe it is helpful practice to use a range of heavy bag work, including bare knuckle, bag gloves, MMA gloves, and heavier boxing gloves such 16 oz...
of course it all depends on your goals, and you seem to be most interested in real world defense and maybe MMA so the full range of gloves and no gloves would be great imo
use bare knuckle to "toughen the knuckles and wrist", and to simulate real conditions, caution must be used here as already stated by many others.
use MMA gloves to train to simulate MMA fighting conditions (if that interest you) if no interest in MMA use bag gloves and or wrapping to allow you to work for more power and speed with less chance of injury.
and use the heavier boxing gloves to build stamina and allow you to use even more power while hitting the bag, but I really like the use of these heavy gloves cause they really work the shoulders and your stamina in full 3 or 5 minute round training.
boxers will of course benifit from using a range of boxing glove sizes (including the oz that they plan on fighting with) light gloves for speed heavier gloves for stamina and power etc.
so IMHO I think depending on your goals bare knuckle heavy bag work can be very beneficial if used correctly.
good luck

bare knuckle bag work = very very bad!!!

On a side note I don't agree with knuckle/hand conditioning. Shin conditioning yes, but your hands are much more delicate. A good tape job or good wraps and good gloves if you are gonna throw any hands and actually hit anything IMO.

Karatekas hit the heavy bag barefisted and do alot of knuckle conditioning since the beginning

So what the hell DO YOU know?

and compared to boxers and thaiboxers, they don't punch as hard either. I'll bet the kyokushin guys who do compete in the ring train with gloves on. (edit: at least they do if they're throwing hooks - thanks EEG)

Maybe they don't punch as hard while punching the bag -- which would make sense as they're punching without wraps and gloves -- but to suggest that Karateka (especially Kyokushinkai Karateka) don't punch as hard as boxers or thaiboxers is a very dubious statement.

Many of these guys can punch really really hard.

by the way I know a guy, who's been a great muay thai fighter and he really damaged his hands completely by hitting the bag without gloves... sad...

What if you art purposely going lightly for knuckle conditioning, does that make sense.

I have seen many karateka and KKer's who hit the bag without gloves. Also they do punch as hard as boxers or MTer's

When you condition your hands your ligaments and bone get alot stronger, so your wrist is alot less prone to be damaged. I dont see a negative aspect when strengthening a fragile point in your body.

I dont see a problem with doing it a little just to get a feel for punching without gloves on.

I am older and I haven't worn gloves or raps in 15 years. It is a matter of conditioning and how you train.

I will tell you this I can hit any surface as hard as I want and I will not bleed and my hand will not swell. My knuckles are not fat, deformed and hideous...but I started light and was trained on how to form a proper fist and how to strike.

If you bust your wrist on a heavy bag it is because you have poor technique and if you wear gloves to mask that fact, you'll find out on the street or in the ring at some point.

I always finish a heavy bag session with a few rounds with just hand wraps on, not total bare knuckle cos u scrap skin off your knuckles for no reason. This is to just get used to punching without gloves on for street situations
