I'm not discuting who was the better fighter (I'm sure it was Fedor) but if we analyze popularity, importance to their respective organizations and sport and achievements there will be many arguments in favor of Fedor?

In favor of Fedor he was not beaten in his prime and was way more dominating than Couture. But the double title account a lot IMO and Randy was an more popular face

Fedor also beat Sylvia and Arlovski close to their primes which was popular at the time

Fedor in terms of MMA in general and globally.

Randy in terms of american mma/audience, only.

Also you left out that Fedor beat AA, Tim and Mir. Randy beat Tim too but Fedor literally beat every single top HW contemporary except Barnett and Ricco who he did not fight. Both beat Randy and Fedor beat the guys that beat them.

Top fighters chased Fedor cuz they knew he was the best of the best. Fedor is literally the GOAT to more MMA fighters than anyone else

I wish that matchup could have came to fruition. That would have been the biggest fight for that era, in my opinion.

I have it behind prime Wand vs Chuck, but still a huge fight. It seemed possible when UFC was trying to sign Fedor, but that quickly got squashed.

well Fedor retired only 2 yrs ago while Randy retired like 15 yrs ago.

You're fighting a losing battle trying to objectively argue Fedor on Sherdog in regardless to anything non-GOAT standing related. And even then it's pretty iffy as his fans will invent all sorts of make belief there too even if regardless everybody pretty much agrees he's in the top 5.

Randy was a bigger draw than Fedor. He main invented like 17 PPVs. Randy was a major backbone for the UFC. Randy is probably more important. Sylvia vs Courture sold like 5x the amount of Sylvia vs Fedor. Half a million people paid to see a Tim Sylvia fight - think about that.


Even though Fedor was the unbeaten HW champion in Pride, he wasn't as important to them as Randy was to the UFC in terms of expanding and becoming a popular product. If this was Courture vs Sakuraba, Takada, or maybe even W Silva I'm not sure if I could say the same.

Of course Randy is the more important fighter in MMA history. It's an objectively silly question. Pride was not and has never been a more important organization for MMA's rise in popularity to today.
