Is Cowboy Really a "Legend"?

Decent career but never held the title, WEC or UFC iirc, having said that, other than title fights he did great, sure, whatever, Legend and GOAT are two terms that are thrown around way too much in MMA, he can be one too i guess, i love the guy btw.

It simply comes down to personal standards. I hold the term “legend” in the highest regard. Hughes, Penn, Gracie, Wanderlei, Shogun, Cro Cop, Fedor, Noguiera, etc.

Cowboy was an excellent fighter with a distinct personality. He was exciting, and he fought often. Legend? I’m not sure. Probably not in my book, but I could see a case.

I'm the same way, most people toss around the words "legend" and "hall of famer" way too casually. Everyone who's touched a belt or run up a ton of wins through sheer longevity is a "legend", that's just stupid. IMO the only legends on the current UFC roster are Aldo, Jones, and Shogun, with Cruz being a maybe. That's how high the bar should be set.

As much as I like Cowboy, he's nowhere close to those guys in terms of accomplishments & influence on the sport.

Fuck yeah he is! Plenty of fighters have won belts with much worse records than Donald's. The man's been fighting absolute killers for 15 years, there's no padding on that record! He's beaten championship level fighters like Alvarez, Bendo & Do Bronx, just not at quite the right time to get gold, but even going back to his first fight against Bendo in WEC his fights have always been fun. Not sure I can think of a single boring fight he's had.

You don't have to be "one of the best LW's to ever compete" in order to be a legend.

No, but doing that plus an exciting fighting style, plus an anyone/anywhere attitude, plus fighting multiple relevant fighters across two divisions, plus multiple highlight reel finishes does.

you mean like how he was used as fodder for Conor.. that is HOF worthy?

the guy is 3-6-1(NC) in his last 10. i guess sam alvey should be HOF as well.

The case obviously doesn't come from his last 10 fights dude.

right so does it come from being used as fodder for conor?

and sam alvey has a great case to be a legend too. basically the cowboy of 205.

I don't believe Magny is near the top for most finishes or bonuses.
most wins is a more impressive feat than than either of those

think about it, Neil fucking Mgny has more wins at WW than GSP, but I doubt you would consider him a legend

reason being a lot of these records can be broken by journeymen if they stick around long enough. Cowboy has all these records because he's a good fighter, but also because he fought 5 times a year for 10 years straight. all those records he has are only legendary if you take away context.

No, he had quite an extensive career before that where he beat a lot of people, had title shots, had a lot of highlight reel finishes etc etc.

The Sam Alvey comparison makes no sense.

Legend isn't the same as one of the greatest pure skill wise. Legend takes all kinds of factors into account. Tank Abbott is an MMA legend for example.

He got old and less durable, brotha. It happens. You combine that with the fact that Cowboy had a susceptibility to getting blitzed early in fights and it’s not a good combination. A guy like Conor would’ve always have given him issues because of that reason. However, 2015’ish Cerrone against Conor at 155 pounds would’ve been a hell of a fight. Conor could’ve put him to sleep. Who knows? Or Cowboy could’ve kicked the shit out of his legs like he did to Eddie Alvarez and broken him down. The version of Cowboy that Conor fought in 2020 was 36 years old with a gazillion fights and had already looked like he had lost steps before that.

Yes. People act like he’s some journeyman but he did challenge for the belt. Four times if you count the WEC and I thought he beat Jamie Varner in his first title shot. He also has four wins over former WEC/UFC champions.

I actually thought he should have received the win over Benson in their first WEC bout, which was a nutty affair with Cowboy throwing an assault of submission attacks at Henderson towwrd the end of the fight. Of course, I haven't seen it since the night of the fight, so I'll admit I may not recall it in its entirety.

Sam Alvey hasn't been finishing top 10 opponents for almost 15 years, nor did he ever win 4 UFC fights in 10 months.

Although I doubt you're really here to engage in reasonable discussion, given that your post is just plain stupid.

Lets see.

#2 all time most UFC fights with 38
#2 all time most UFC wins with 23
#2 all time most finishes with 16
#2 all time most significant strikes landed
#1 all time most knockdowns
#1 all time most bonuses

I'd say it's safe to say yes.
He really has the most knockdowns in the UFCs?
