Is Conor a defending champion?

Technically, it's a title defense of the interim belt, not the championship belt.

Dana created an interim belt a couple of months after Ngannou beat Stipe. Why? Because he's a four year old girl. If Gane had beat Francis and you counted that as a "title defense" then you guys are completely out to lunch.
Like I said it technically is, but people will have their opinions. UFC considers it a defense since it's a unification fight.

Everyone knows the reason Gane got the interim. Gane isn't the only interim champion in UFC history. Regardless for the reason for the quick interim, he is still technically an interim champion and fought in a unification fight. Opinions won't change facts. People can just disagree with it but that won't change anything.

The official records, and anyone that uses logic, does not consider it a title defense. That's a fact, not an opinion. Conor has never defended a belt and Adesanya beating Rob in the first fight isn't a title defense.

The reason Gane won an interim is because Dana is a child. No shit he isn't the only interim champion in history, but it was completely unnecessary and interim belts are handed out on Dana's whim. And no, he wouldn't have had a title defense if he won.

-Oh and if you think that the stones added to the belt actually mean something official, Petr Yan was given a ruby for beating Sandhagen. That's how "official" the UFC is.

You know what, if you're the interim champ and you beat the champ, it should count as a title defense because:

1. You're facing the best guy in the division at the time.
2. It's not your fault that you fought for an interim belt rather than the real one. The champ was unavailable to fight, but you still stepped up and fought.
3. If you lose, you're no longer the interim champ. You're not a champ at all. So you are risking your own title in this fight.

A lot of folks aren't gonna like this though because this would apply to Conor.
So he gets credit for a title defense ... because he beat a fat and not even training 10 day notice Chad Mendes flown in last minute from hunting to 'earn' his shot against Aldo? Lmao.

Conor's double champ status is a bit of a draud thing if you ask me.
Casuals would be more amazed hearing double champ (with no defenses) than someone who defended the belt multiple times.
I'm not saying it's easy what Conor did (especially in such style) but he got to jump the whole line in 155 to do what he did.

If the double Champs were to climb the rankings in both divisions that would be something. Or defend both belts at least once or twice, like DC did at least.

I still refer to all Interim Champions as Champions
Hard to say Barao never had title defenses Id say this checks out
Conor is a defending champ
Didnt Baro actually defended the Interim belt? Probably the only one to have IC defenses, Conor didnt.

Nah, you have to beat the champion. Defenses only count once you are undisputed.

Also, Adesanya's case was a bit different than usual since GSP vacated and Rob was promoted to champ. Regardless, unifying shouldn't be a title defense.
What about Arlovski’s defenses as interim? He was promoted because Mir never came back. Nothing changed between his reign as champ and as interim champ, yet he still officially only has one defense.

The interim is created all willy nilly and it sort of devalues the status of that belt. I am not sure it is something the fighter's requested for in the beginning so they can get points or it's something the promotion pushes and uses as punishment now.

His fans are super fruity. I went on his twitter earlier for some other clown ass thread.

3 types of people on his twitter.

The sentimental

The "funny"

And the sad:

Funny how you went from "Conor has no fans anymore" to "Conor's fans are sentimental, 'funny' and sad". <Lmaoo> Just admit it, you may not like him but there are millions that still do. He could fight a sentient wet paper bag and it would still out sell anyone on the entire UFC roster - for better or worse, that is just the way it is.

Yeah, you don't sound biased at all.

Was it his fault that Aldo pulled out? He fought the next best guy.

Also, he went from fighting a striker to a wrestler. Did you see how much easier his fight with Jose was than his fight with Chad?

Personally, I don't give a shit about Conor though. I'm talking about the situation as a general rule.

McGregor denialists in shambles
McGregor has a title defense to his name

Tank you Gynosanya

Wrong, did you watched Ngannou vs Gane?

The interim title is literally the dispute.

That's why the fight is happening so that only one fighter can be claimed as champion in that weight class.

Interesting thread, sort of.

Renen Barao defended his "interem" belt against Michael McDonald and Eddie Wineland right?

I don't know how many little gemstones are on his mantelpiece belts, but that would likely be the best barometer to settle the issue.

None of this raises Conor McGregor's stock.

A following and a fanbase are two completely separate things. The people replying you him are not his fans, they're fught fans, apart from the Brazilian guy...

I would love to see him back, so would most people - that doesn't mean that I would call myself a fan of his, and neither would any of the people on that twitter feed apart from the extreme sad acts/casuals.

He is still very much a person of interest and a celebrity... But to say his fan base is a shadow of what it was before is fantasy.

Yeah Andrei defended the interim belt during a period when there was still a champion (Mir). Beating Eilers shouldn't be an official title defense. Since there was no unification fight you might argue the interim defense should just be promoted to a championship defense. Personally, I would still say he has the one defense (Buentello).

An interim belt shouldn't need to be defended though. If the organization is allowing for interim defenses then the champion should have been stripped at that point. Same in the Barao case.
