Is Cain's head trainer Javier overrated?

Seriously? A thread saying that a fighter would be champ even without a great camp? look at the champs and see how many are from nowhere camps.

Cain: AKA
Jones: Jackson
Weidman: Serra/Longo
Hendricks: Team Takedown (that ones kinda nowhere)
Pettis: Roufusport
Aldo: Nova Uniao
Dillishaw: Alpha Male
DJ: AMC Pankration (another nowhere)

Sure looks like being at a top camp is important to me.

I guess my point is that AKA is a top camp because Cain goes there. He originally went there because it's in San Jose, close to his home.

Cain grew up in Arizona. He probably went to AKA because he was scouted by Dewayne Zinkin. AKA already had a good reputation before Cain joined. Frank Shamrock trained there for a little bit and I think he trained Penn at AKA. And then they had Swick and Southworth on TUF 1 and Koscheck decided to go there after being friends with Southworth.

I think Bob Cook got a lot of the credit for the training whereas Javier was just known as the owner of the gym. Cain does seem to have a good rapport with Javier.

Every top camp has a roster of great fighters though.

Jackson's MMA, American Top Team, Extreme Couture, The Blackzilians, Blackhouse TeamNogueira...etc.

So it's a top camp.... With an overrated head trainer.

Ok breh

Koscheck, Josh T, and Southworth were never anywhere near Cain's level.

I think AKA has little to do with his greatness. He'd be a killer if he trained at any of the top camps in the US. Hell, he'd probably be just as bad ass even with mediocre trainers and training partners. With his hunger and work ethic, I don't think it's that important where he trains.

It's very rare for a guy to be truly elite on just talent alone. Also given the fact that there have been so many top guys from that camp I tend to think it's not just a one off of insane talent.

Look at that hair

He really let himself go...

P.S: He trained Frank Shamrock and Bj Penn as well!!!

doesn't matter.

The fact is AKA is a top camp with or without Cain. The fighters this camp has produced speaks for itself.

If AKA is a top camp, then the odds are that the trainer running said camp probably knows what he's doing.

Not sure why that's so hard for you to understand.

I tend to agree. I've said the same thing about Chris Weidman. The guy would be a superstar no matter where he trained. I think AKA is more credible than Serra/Longo but Cain and DC would both be superstars even without Mendez training them.

Fitch and Koscheck were #1 contenders and Josh Thomson was a Strikeforce champ. ATT had a good reputation before Cain got there and Cain certainly didn't go there because it was close to his home. Which it isn't, he's from Arizona. He probably went there because they sold him on the fact that they could turn wrestlers into good mixed martial artists. Which they did.

Yes, similar to Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat. If you got Lebron, you should go to 4 straight finals and should win a few of them.

That's a terrible comparison. Javier trained Cain into the champion he is now. LEBRON already had championship talent but, just had a shitty team

Would AKA be a top camp without Cain? Yes
Would AKA be getting the sort of attention they are getting now without Cain? NO!

AKA has produced no UFC champions since BJ Penn and Shamrock. Cain has certainly put AKA back on the map in terms of the ELITE camps (top 3) for sure.

Its not coincidence that all the top guys train with other top guys.

Since Barao lost his belt no camp has had two belts.

Wonder who is the first to get two again.

But if Cain were training elsewhere, for all we know, DC might be the HW champ right now.

And give Mendez credit for hiring DC as the wrestling coach. That's a major coup. A big part of running any enterprise is who you surround yourself with.

DJ trains with Hume doesnt he? he's super legit afaik

team takedown might not be the most highly regarded but laimon has been around the game for a long time

i think what people are missing is that as a pro fighter doing well in the ufc you have a lot of options. you dont need to stick around some small time camp and as a pro fighter you understand who and what camp is making you better

theres a ton of options for fighters in california and AKA has had a ton of legit pros go through there and continues to produce top talent. just about any gym in the world would welcome guys like DC and cain but they stay at AKA for a reason
