You can certainly overshadow your accomplishments by being a total mess. When you used to think BJ Penn you used to think one of the greats but now the first thing that will spring to people's mind is he is a tragic loser who doesn't know how to move on with his life. Few things more sad than a man past his prime who can't accept it and move on and do something else.

You can definitely overshadow accomplishments. The point i was actually trying to make is that being a fuck-up does not mean that your accomplishments disappear. Once you did something, it's done. You can't change it. OJ Simpson is one of the greatest football players of all times, regardless of the second half of his life. Mozart is still highly regarded even though he died being an impoverished bum. Do you know what i mean?

I was a huge Penn fan. His behavior outside of the cage (rumored and documented) has soured me quite a bit in him. His recent losses don’t help. But I’d still be rooting for him if I didn’t know he was such a POS.
