Is a mixture of machine and free weights the best route?

I wanna get like Ubereem status, I know it's part genetics but I want to lift for the most gain, while still having the endurance. I do a MMA style lift which is 4 sets two heavy for strength and two light for endurance alternating between the two. Should I use mainly free weights or use machines?

you should do both at the same time. you could do incline bench while in the leg press.

Why not do heavy barbell work and add some assistance while also adding in some conditioning work???

I wouldn't do machines, just add lots of pull ups, dips, sprints, skipping, running, stuff like that.

In fact you could tons tactical barbell program and add one of the conditioning blocks from tb2 and you can have it all. That's what I'm doing and it's working really well.

Im not doing that Hippy vegan workout real men use weights.

Ain't nothing wrong with using a few machines.

As long as you get your heavy barbell work in, there's nothing wrong with using machines for your assistance work. If you're plateauing and nothing's breaking past that plateau, incorporating machines may help.
That was my case actually. I used to just do a regular 5x5 with nothing but that, and stalled for awhile. Once I started adding in accessory work + high volume, things really flew off. I've doing a more bodybuilding-ish routine for awhile now (PPL), and things are great. Lifts are progressing, I'm not sluggish in MMA, Muay Thai, or BJJ, and overall everything's good. Heavier days I keep the majority of it free weights, while hypertrophy days has alot of machine and cable work thrown in the mix as well.

MMA style lift, I like the sound of that.

I'm takling over for Eric or whatever the hell his name is now.
