Introduction to SUMO

one more bump for the upcoming tournament in a few days.
 
hope baruto seals the deal, a second yokozuna might really shake things up.
 
bumping this up for a new tournament starting in a little over a week.

a couple news items:

Association mulls idea of early Yokozuna - Ozeki bouts

Chiganoura-oyakata hinted to reporters yesterday that the Sumo Association may break precedent and actually schedule Yokozuna - Ozeki matchups in the first five days of the tournament in an effort to draw more interest to sumo early on in the basho. In speaking with reporters, the oyakata said, "The proposal has been raised to pair the Yokozuna against some of the Ozeki during the jobansen. There are now 6 Ozeki on the banzuke, so it makes sense to pair some of them against each other early on and then save the matchups late in the basho for those rikishi who have the best records." A matchup featuring a Yokozuna and/or Ozeki in the first week has happened nine times previously with the most recent example occurring at the 1982 Aki basho.

man i'd love to see him get his first top division winning record. at m12 though, he has a fair amount of leeway if he gets a losing record that isn't too bad.

and for anyone seeing this who's unfamiliar with the man...

takanoyama is pretty unique. not many others in sumo, particularly in the top divisions can do what he can do. although others can do amazing things in different ways, like this nuts win by asashoryu:



although he didn't technically win this match, he was able to keep himself from falling over, while bending backwards, until after his opponent had already dropped to the ground so he should have gotten the win. instead the judges said it was too close to call and ordered a rematch, which asashoryu did win.

great, there's so much out there from sumo to watch.

the next tournament will be starting on July 8th, and we'll have a thread here in the grappling forum for it, so everyone should feel free to follow along.
 
there has been some talk about sumo here recently, and Takanoyama in particular, so i thought i'd bump this up for the new tournament starting this weekend.
 
Thanks for posting this stuff. I got to admit I thought sumo was just a bunch of fat guys shoving each other. Not like the beautiful zhoo zhitsu, my fren. But the Takanoyama thread showed me that there is some amazing stuff going on. Plus, I'm always rooting for the little guy winning with technique, even if the little guy is 200+ lbs. War Takanoyama!

absolutely, you'll see that among pretty much all sumo fans. even though takanoyama is a foreigner and fairly low ranked in the top division, he gets one of the biggest rounds of applause from the japanese crowd when he's introduced.

it's always great to see the little guy beat the big guy.

Have you guys watch any of the International Sumo stuff? I was watching videos of the US Sumo Open, and its just bad and hard to watch sometimes. The tachi-ai are typically extremely weak and the mawashi work lacks technique. I know they don't have the resources (or talent) to really develop anything outside of Japan, and I appreciate them spreading the sport but its doesn't make it any more entertaining to watch.

yeah, i haven't watched much of it, and pretty much for the reasons you said. of course i support what they're doing and everything, but it's not the same as sumo in japan and i can't get particularly excited about it.
