Why people call for interim belt in MW?
It is like 2 months from last DDP defense?
Shouldn't interim be, when champ doesn't fight for like a year? I checked history - champs fought for average each beetween 5 to 8 month time schedule. If DDP would fight even in november, it would still be normal time skip.

unless the UFC is desperate for a 317 main event and need to throw something on there I think they should just wait till whenever ddp is ready to fight assuming he doesn't take too long

The idea of #1 contender fights seems to be dead. Have to slap fake title fights together every time a fight doesn’t materialize at the time planned.

I think you don’t see the whole picture.

What is his injury?

How long does it usually take to properly heal up and fight again after a similar injury?

What makes you think that even if a Dr says he should be good to go in Z amount of time. That it’s not possible to have a relapse at some point before then? Making the whole thing even longer possibly.

If I was running this shitshow I’d definitely make an IC MW Champion. Borz vs whomever the UFC chooses. Then if Dricus is injured for an undetermined amount of time. Why would you have the division stagnating? That makes zero sense.

I sure as shit wouldn’t be waiting around for possibly several months with my thumb up my ass. Hoping the injury heals.

Make an IC champ, and that person fights Dricus when he is healthy. It’s just common sense.

I haven’t even heard what the injury might be. It might require surgery, and a long rehab.

Because we don’t condone pull out merchants who only want to fight one dimensional strikers.

It all makes sense now, the only grappler he fought was 40 year old shopworn Brunson who ragdolled him around the cage until he gassed.

I have zero doubts now that Khamzat would’ve destroyed DDP on the mat. DDP knows this… nobody in South Africa to replicate Khams style.

Bro went from tough guy to duck artist against his first elite grappler.

Jokes aside there are 2 main reasons for the more ridiculous of the interim titles (like when the champ is healthy and just fought)

1) they don't have a title fight to headline the card and they believe having a title fight, even a completely meaningless bullshit made up paper title, will sell better.

2) sometimes fighters have it in their contract or bout agreement (which is a contract technically) that they will fight for a title, this often includes a pay scale increase to championship tier and usually includes a pay of no less than 250k and more recently 500k or so base pay, but more importantly also it triggers PPV points in most cases.

3) I'm just guessing here but UFC may also have contracts either with tv/streaming distributors or venues which stipulate a certain event be headlined with a title fight, even if that means #11 ranked Raging Al Iaquinta or a guy who was supposed to be on the prelims like Joe Soto. (Who I believe had held a regional org title prior to signing with the UFC)

It is a lazy and cheap marketing tactic that the UFC uses when it suits the company.

They will award or strip interim (and undisputed) titles whenever they deem it worthwhile...no rules, no consistency.

Honestly though, Imavov vs Khamzat interim does sound good af. You've got Imavov who's been active and knocked out Adesanya, and you've got Khamzat who easily ragdolled Whittaker and finished him in the first round

I just wish interims were legally binding, like it would be actually illegal for the UFC to match up Jones with Stipe because Aspinall's interim belt legally entitled him to fight the champ. That would give interim fights such as this a lot more weight

Edit: Someone pointed out DDP defended 2 months ago so I'm switching to team no-interim. The Strickland rematch was lame so I kinda forgot there had been a recent defense

Because the last defense was a worthless piece of shit no one asked for, and he one before that was even more nonsensical, so now we have 2 guys who earned a shot, neither of which are going to be getting it any time soon

The residual effects of bad title fight booking is really coming home to roost lately.

Islam not fighting Armen created a monster clusterfuck at 155.

You can even trace it back further, CHARLES was booked to get his rematch, he pulled out leading to the 2nd Volk fight which was the straw the broke the camels back and lead to Islam refusing to fight any more FWs.

Back another step, the pointless fight against Dustin who got his shot with 1 fight win streak outside the top TEN

Back to back to back defenses that weren't against the #1 contender and we have a line of fighters who claim they were promised or even booked in a title shot

HW has wasted 2 years for a Jon vs Stipe fight nobody wanted, Tom has been interim champ for 1.5 years and Jon is trying to break the all time HW consecutive days as champ by sitting out on 1 title defense against a retired 42 year old.

So many pointless rematches creating backlogs.
OMalley and Pereira were both decisively beaten, no controversy.

Khamzat has been pretty clearly the guy everyone wants to see and we get the Strickland rematch.

Shavkat is the guy we want to see but we get JDM instead.

The ufc matchmakers suck

Agreed with the rest but the Dustin title fight was legitimately good and a nice reward for fighting down against a surging contender (who admittedly has gotten destroyed since then). Dustin made it to the 5th round and put a huge gash on Islam, that's better than Oliveira did
