interesting Weili interview

Wait what? Are you kidding me? She is not even close to eclipsing Joanna’s defences yet.

I like the girl but one title defence is all she has right now.

Jesus christ have you just forgotten everything Joanna accomplished as a champ? Wtf

I’m sorry if you don’t understand English, but show me another 21-1 wmma fighter on a 21 fight winning streak, in the UFC right now.

Just enable English subtitles in the video. This is interesting because it is CCTV (state-run) so it incorporates China's mainstream perception of MMA. Any Chinese Sherbros, let me know if something is really off with their translation or my cliffs:

2:00 = Older, small female host asks to get hit by Weili. Weili says no it would be way too hard for you to take, only males can get punched by her.

2:45 = Wore casual clothes for the interview to be comfortable, but she was tempted to wear a dress to show that she likes to be girly outside the sport.

4:20 = Trained traditional MA when she was young. Eventually this leads into her stating that young should be able to follow their dreams / she quit the job that wasn't her dream to go into MMA

6:00 = Interesting cultural commentary here. Host takes mainstream Chinese viewpoint in saying that it looks brutal and asking where the beauty is in it. Weili gives the correct answer in my eyes... pointing out MMA takes everything to see what works best (scientific method applied to fighting basically). Host says that increases the chances of injury and Weili says yes (duh, what works in hurting people increases chances to hurt them). Host then falls back if it has wisdom to it or if it is about power. Weili replies it is both. Host says sports tend to have philosophies behind them and asks what the spirit/logic/philosophy of MMA is. Weili says it is in not giving up/persevering.

7:00 = Weili says she needed to be both humble and relentless in MMA. Host says those might be contradictions. Right off the heels of the conversation from a minute ago, Weili answers with a really smooth comeback here IMO and turns it back to traditional Chinese culture... says humbleness is demanded but also they should be strong/relentless as well. "We are not soft and weak." Good luck disagreeing with that one in China.

8:00 = Lives a simple life. Eaty/sleepy/trainy. Spars only men. Her coach is 70kg (LW). She says doing so makes you realize a SW pro female can't beat a LW pro male. Striking is challenging because of the reach disadvantage.

9:00 = Kind of educating the host some. She asks if the male can take her down. She says yeah, then he tries, then she stuffs him. They explain it is harder to get taken down when you know the person is about to shoot. Host asks "what guidance" they follow when it isn't as rehearsed and Weili points out the obvious: "he does whatever he wants" and the host then understands "so the better your sparring partner, the more it helps you."

10:00 = Eats steak in mornings. She loves soda/sweets and used to sneak sodas after training, but had to cut them out of her diet to remain on top. She can always go back to eating more sweets after she retires.

13:15 = In a nutshell: achieve/believe/conceive. Weili says it much better though of course :)

15:00 = When Joanna said "who's that" to her on social media it irked her a bit because she knew Joanna had to pay attention to ranked fighters in her own division. Says Joanna didn't want to fight her when she only had 3 fights (so just before Weili fought Andrade) because Joanna had nothing to gain/everything to lose.

16:15 = When she first met Andrade she thought she was too small / thought back to her experience of only fighting LW males and that she'd be able to take her. Her confidence came from putting in the work in training. Said her MT coach simulated Andrade and put in so much training/she hit him so often that she cracked his headguard.

18:00 = Felt calm during title fight / saw Andrade's strikes coming and was countering her. She felt faster than her. She said she looked forward to proving her doubters wrong with that fight/educating them on her skill.

Thanks mate, props for the translation!

I¨d like you twice/thrice if i could!

Agreeing with the "Great ambassador for the port"-sentiment!

LoL a win streak seriously and you think that eclipses anything JJ, Nunes, Rousey or Shev have done or currently doing? How many of those fights are in the UFC? How
Many against quality opponents.

stop sucking on her tits boy.

I feel like she has to fake all the TMA talk for the government. She was a Sanda fighter but her coaches are Thai and other foreigners. I am pretty sure she doesn't practice mongolian wrestling

You clearly have no reading comprehension, or are trolling at this point. You’re saying things I didn’t. Go away.

She practices what is effective as she should.

China did have numerous unarmed and armed combat styles that were effective but successive Chinese governments purged those people and their records from history because it was thought of as a threat to the stability of the state. Stability of the state is the chief primary goal of China. They aren't the only country responsible for this. It's not a unique mentality held by successive Chinese governments. Japan, Korea were the same. The sport version of martial arts remains and the old has had to be discovered anew.

They do lament the loss of historical works yet they lionize the people who did it and force the rest of the country to do the same. It's doublethink / cognitive dissonance. Hardly the only country/government that can be accused of this but there it is.

If Brian Butler is to believed and lets say it happened prior to what's recorded

Okay, let's go forward with that hypothesis.

then why were the fans still standing there holding the flag at the end of the open workout. He claimed security had to deal with the fans.

He said security had to "address" the fans, he didn't say they removed those fans. There's a lot of leeway in what "address" could cover, including any form of speak to the fans or communicate to the fans, and how or when this addressing occured was not mentioned by Butler, which also leaves a lot of leeway there too.

If the flipping of the of the bird is what occurred at 0:35 of the video, note what a positive vocal response it immediately gets from the audience. As I said previously, this suggests to me that those audience members that we hear at that point thought that what she did was something appropriate to the situation and not an over-reaction.

As to your other statement. It takes two to tango. Your friends over at the WMMA thread are elitist pricks who shat on me the moment I made a single incorrect statement.

I miss a lot that happens over there. And that wasn't me that did that to you, so don't include me in that. But having observed how you interact with people, and how they interact with you, I believe I've mostly just ignored you (not put you "on ignore", I've never put anyone on this forum "on ignore", despite being advised to do so).

Actually, I haven't posted over there for quite a while, except for a very recent post (but before this thread was made). As it coincidentally happens, that recent post was a post about Joanna. It was a fun post from her Instagram account in which she shows herself trying some VR gaming for the first time. Why did I post a fun Instagram video by Joanna? Because I'm a fan of her, as I've said.

Thanks for the summary and time stamps. Good job!
I wonder how accurate it would be to use this interviewer's slant of WMMA to get a feel on the mainstream understanding over there? Probably pretty accurate is my guess...MMA in general...?
Thanks man.

I think that's safe to assume yeah. Since it is CCTV (state-run) and the interviewer is their employee I'd imagine she at least has somewhat of a script / isn't asking too much that she isn't supposed to be asking. Hell, American media runs on scripts as well and they aren't even state-run ha (corporate-run rather).

Honestly the premise of the interview ITSELF is promising. It means the government wanted that interviewer to run that script to Weili, Weili to respond, and then showcase Weili's answers to the public.
She's a lesbian
Don't post speculative stuff about something as personal as a fighter's sexuality man, especially if you're just pulling it out of your ass.
Thanks TS. Love mma for getting a glimpse into people from different cultures. Weili's a great fighter and also enjoy her intelligence & good sense of humor. Rose is also amongst my favorite fighters. She's going to have her hands full.
Yeah they're both nice. I am leaning towards Weili on this one but who knows, since Rose has got some sharp technique. I was only certain on Andrade losing to Weili, since ironically her title win over Rose showcased that her technique wasn't quite on the same level as Rose/Weili.

She has no claim to Goat straw weight yet tbh. Win streaks don’t mean anything, it's who you beat

So you are just going to gloss over the fact that there is no evidence to what was said by Brian Butler and you deliberately tying his statement together with general racist behaviour in the US and Joanna liking a picture that I already told you Weili also liked.

Since you are so fond of logical conclusions how do you square that circle when it comes to Rose and her team gloating on JRE how they deliberately came up with responses to anything Joanna said to get the reactions they wanted including contacting the UFC and getting permission not to do any extra media besides the minimum mandated just this one time, something they knew Jonna would seize on, and everybody, apparently you included, fell for it. Same with their conference call interaction. Same manager. Same narrative. Coincidence I assume. Totally innocent happenstance.

History is a son of a bitch.

I clicked on "show ignored content" because of your responses and should not have. And while I am an elitist prick I shit on him for being a hypocrite, not for making a mistake.

Joanna liking a picture that I already told you Weili also liked.
First of all, the picture I posted is more than a "like". "Likes" don't produce a picture with one's account name over it like the picture I found (by a simple google search) and posted.

Secondly, your statement about Weili giving it a "like" is a claim that you didn't provide evidence for.

Thirdly, lets say that Weili did originally give it a like, and then very quickly changed her mind and "unliked" it, as you claim. So what? My point was clearly stated as being that some fans of Joanna's might have taken Joanna's re-post as inspiration or justification to take matters further than that into some live harassment at the open workout, which would support the claim of Brian Butler. You've ignored that valid point entirely, and whether Weili initially "liked" it or not is absolutely irrelevent to that point and really only a diversion from addressing it.

Joanna reposted it probably thinking since Weili liked it it's fine. That's a logical conclusion. One which you like to use.

I don't have to provide evidence for something I saw myself before they took the original post down. The individual who posted it was freaking out in the comments that both Joanna and Weili had liked it. This was long before it ended up in the media. I don't think the post exists anymore. If someone knows how to use the archive feature they can find it. I'm not wasting time on something I know I saw.

How convenient that when there is evidence counter to your claim it can be dismissed out of hand. Classic.

The only person I would choose to beat weili is Nunes.

I always feel like too much politics/agenda always get mixed in with WMMA.
Can’t we just appreciate the fighters as just that, fighters?

Weili is an amazing fighter and championship material, she seems to have a will of iron and a great mindset. She belongs at the top.

You massively overreacted, as usual, blew a gasket and put me on ignore. You aren't used to someone firing back. That's obvious. I made a grievous mistake in apologizing and offering an olive branch because the trolling from your little band picked up from there and got vicious for a long time even going to other social media sites.

The UFC was better when you didn't have so much information available about everything. It just creates friction and reduces enjoyment of what is supposed to be entertainment. Ignorance is bliss etc.
