That’s how you carefully craft a champion. Meticulously pick each fight and spend a year training in between so you can finish your steroid cycles and test clean.
That was only after a certain point. After the first first DC fight. Before that, Jon Jones had what, 14 wins and 0 losses, defending his belt 8x, all within 5 years in the UFC. 15 - 0 in the UFC in 5 years ~ 3 fights a year. Not only that, but they were all against the best opponents from that time, as he defended the belt 7x. Defended vs TRT Vitor, Lyoto Machida, Alexander Gustafsson, Daniel Cormier... Those are only the biggest names, a clear different level in competition from who Kevin Holland faced, plus, the majority of these fights being schedules for 5 rounds — the preparation is different. He couldn't pick and choose when he fought the best available by then.
His pace decreased, sure, but he still didn't avoid any match up at LHW. OSP was the best one there for the time being, he defeated DC again, then Gus again. Had defeated Glover before the DC saga, Glover had been on a 17 wins streak and was 22-1 by then lol. OSP was already part of the third generation on LHW, who he defeated. He defeated Anthony Smith, who had Bisping talking the whole time to be the fighter to defeat JJ once his prediction for Gus 2 failed. Defeated Thiago Santos who was in a big streak and had just KO'd Jan Blachowicz and then, to finish the LHW run, defeated Reyes, another third generation fighter who was undefeated by then. It wasn't easy, but JJ toughened it out and outperformed Reyes, a loss that broke Reyes mentally. Like Mayweather diminished his pace, Jones also did. I think Jones is more professional in the sense he doesn't rush to take fights at a certain point when he already feels some physical limitations. Since he is a ruthless competitor, he won't take short notice fights or anything, he will fully study the opponent, do his dancing rituals and all to be there to win, not to entertain the crowd. Mayweather did that after a certain point and he had already plenty of money. So much his nickname was changed from pretty boy to Money Mayweather. He'd make wayyy more $ in his fights yet he just slowed his pace, JJ kept fighting in a riskier combat sports, I mean, riskier in the sense of losing the fight, for wayyyy less money, but he kept winning.
