what do you do when you are suffering from insomnia.

I took a sleeping pill and it did not work so walked to a bar. Probably not the best cure

Honestly the best thing that works for me when I have a night or a rough couple of days when I can't sleep I just stay up and eventually I fall asleep.

I just make sure to wake up around the same time I normally would if I can, makes sure I'm sleepy enough to go to sleep normally the next night.

Work out. I noticed when I am stressed, I go to the gym I get really tired.

Read your posts, works like a charm

Nah just read a book, eventually I get sleepy and pass out with a book in my face

I sleep like a baby after a big meal.... Currently dieting and starving so I'm awake lol

Going for a long walk or jog at night a few hours before bed and then avoiding the computer and television before bed helps me sleep.

hence Im on sherdog at 3:40 am (my time) so I didnt take my own advice.. I did jog though lol

There are things you can do to head it off (good sleep hygiene, avoid screens before bed, work out, etc.)

I haven't yet found anything that helps when you suddenly wake up at 3:30am and just lie there until your alarm goes off at 6. Like I did this morning.

I went to a testicular cancer survivors group and cried it out. Now I'm sleeping like a baby.

Apparently I'm currently dealing with something called sleep maintenance insomnia.

I fall asleep fine, usually between 10:30 and 11pm, but I wake up at 3:30 am almost on the dot every night, fall back to sleep for an hour or so then wake up again, and am up from that point on, usually tossing and turning until my alarm clock goes off.

It's making me feel tired all the time so it's definitely not just that I don't need as much sleep as I used to.

Things I've tried so far: exercise, smoking weed, sex, yoga, meditation, prayer, alcohol, magnesium, valerian root, melatonin.

None of those things seems to be having any effect and I'd really like to avoid pills.

I'm dealing with an above average amount of stress so I'm sure that's part of it.

Any advice sherbros?

Logotherapy would recommend not trying to sleep but instead try to stay awake. Its called "Paradoxical intention" where what you are trying to do or avoid will happen because you are doing something intentionally do make it so, therefore doing the opposite will have a positive effect (if I understood it correctly).

Insomnia is a real son of a bitch. My poor 8 year old son suffers horribly from insomnia and I'm pretty sure he got it from his old man.

I'm lucky right now as some of the pills I'm taking and weed in smoking is helping me get to sleep. However I know it's only a matter of time before these stop working and I'll have to choose between not sleeping or taking hard core, hangover inducing sleeping aids.

Usually I choose to just not sleep. I'll power through day after day, night after night with 2-5 hours a night. After a few weeks my body can't handle anymore and I'll crash out for almost an entire 24 hours before repeating the cycle.

meditation helped me immensely<though like someone said weed also helps hehe>, getting the chaotic and uncontroled thoughts in order and with that also stress starts taking a bit of a different shape since you begin seeing it in a different light, gettin a bit distance to it,less "identifying" with it.

Did you ever make it to sleep?

Doxylamine works, but gotta take it about 10 hours before waking up again, or I just wake up drowsy. I'm hooked on Ambien; been taking that shit for the better part of 6 years. I'm down to 3.33mgs a night. I have documented sleep apnea, so there's a clear cut reason for why my sleep cycles are jacked. I have a BiPap, and I get better sleep, but falling asleep has always been a bitch for me.

Sex. If that's not happening, masturbation.

I've found that course of action frustratingly unreliable... sometimes I get more worked up afterwards.
