Just because your life was miserable you don't need to want everyone else's to be the same. Grow up some brother.

My life wasn't miserable. I loved it. Working in a bar and grill with a bunch of hot waitresses in your 20s is a lot of fun.

He doesn't have money though and he's Canadian and over 40, lmao.

It's not a compliment it's a self report
I never said anything about him and I never said he wasn't poor.

Just the idea that if you sound poor, but aren't that's a probably good thing and makes one a humble person.

My English might not be good enough for you to grasp this idea.

Equating government paid tax payer funded pension with socialism? Government provided healthcare for life and disability checks? Not astounding in the slightest.

As usual, you’re taking on subjects without a basic understanding of the concepts. Honestly you probably do understand you just try to play dumb to sound like you’re winning an argument. You’re not.

This post is also beginning to reek of bullshit. No one in their right mind would choose to call it quits at 17

1) I'm not debating economics with you. I gave an anecdotal story about living frugally, investing and saving in order to live a dream. You are the village idiot.

2) I did quit at 17 years. I've got 2 DD214's to prove it. I don't give a fuck if you believe it or not. I'll say that the chain of command was certainly surprised. And my exit interview with the post commander was colorful.

I had just got stationed at Ft Polk. 2nd worst duty station in the Army. My Brigade just came back from the Afganistan debacle. Right after COVID, where I believed we were truly wrong for forcing vaccines. And SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE of all this trans bullshit sensitivity. Truly a shit time for someone who joined in time of war to go to war.

As I drove across country to yet ANOTHER fucking summer long training event my wife sent me a video of my son learning to ride a bike for the first time. And that was it.

I decided to accelerate my timeline. And give up that sweet sweet pension. Oh I've had this same conversation many times. The Army doesn't give a fuck about you when you're gone.

No regrets.

Live smart. Learn about money. Invest early and often. Pick a partner who doesn't like to spend. This thread is all over the place but suffice to say, I've seen high earners who will always be broke because they live above their means and ive seen people who buy Great Saver brand coffee and drive an F150 who are sitting on 8 digits.

Not at all. I used to be one of those people. I used to spend money like a drunken sailor when I was younger.

I wish someone had a frank conversation about money with me when I was 19 rather than having to figure it out for myself in my 30s.
Except you DID do that.

I appreciate this reflection, however part of that frank conversation should have been pointing out to you that wealthy people engage in FAR more frivolous and irresponsible spending than you do, and what's different is their access to resources. This way you dont feel this undeserved shame for not being born correctly, and you feel like you're actually foundationally capable of doing something with yourself. Discussing your personal habits isnt a bad thing, especially in a system absolutely designed to make you spend money on things you dont need.

No, but I'm sensing a lack of a strong male role model.

No you're not. But you might be projecting that.

Saying someone "invested" and it paid off is little more than saying they gambled and won. Plenty of amateur poker players became Pros and made a lot of money as well, doesnt mean anyone could do it. Stocks crash out all the time and the biggest profiteers off the stock market are either insider trading or directly manipulating the market.

No and you really shouldn’t debate economics with me. It won’t go well for you. I already had to educate you once on this.

The Army certainly won’t give a fuck about you when you’re gone- it doesn’t give a fuck about you while you’re in. Don’t really see why that makes giving up your retirement at the finish line but you do you. I won’t ask you about it anymore you sound real fucking triggered right now my man.

I do not argue your point.

However history is on the side of the DOW/S&P investor. Averaging 10% returns for a long, long time.

Perhaps the biggest profiteering are cheats. That doesn't stop po folk like me from making money.

And I'm the first to say how absolutely lucky I got in 2008. I came back from my Iraq deployment with all that sweet sweet tax free money. I got MSFT at around 26 or 28? Im sitting on 1800 shares. I had to sell some to buy the boat.

He said his dad died in another thread, when he was a kid IIRC, but he's one of those where is hard to separate the reality from the trolling

I'm just saying nothing I'm saying suggests "lack of male role model" or whatever such horsesh*t. Bringing up my Mom is some b*tch-made beta boy sh*t. I'm more frugal than my wife is by a Country mile, I just told her this morning we're not running out and buying shelves at IKEA to accommodate sh*t in the garage I'm gonna throw out. That's because my Mother (one of the people who raised me) is the most frugal person I know. She taught me how to do my taxes. She helped me open my first bank account. She taught me how the accounts worked and which ones were best. The most direct male role model I had had a drinking habit, though he did take care of me. He pissed away plenty of money and in his elderly years bought a f*ckin timeshare thinking it was gonna make him rich.

Political differences aside you'll never see me slight a person who makes their life better without resorting to crime, especially if they dont already possess an advantage. I'm just noting that the majority of elevating of social class I've ever seen is a product of good fortune, and favoritism (a hook-up or tip). And that's not necessarily a bad thing, just that guys like you and me its hammered into our heads when we're little that crime doesnt pay, when the reality is we are raised in a system where the punishment for crimes is often TO pay, which means the wealthy can absolutely get away with it at a favorable ratio. So it definitely pays, for them.

LOL.

When was this?

Was it before or after you incorrectly assumed i was living on a pension?

I feel like a 20 something coffee Baristta or Uber driver is trying to lecture me about my career choices.

I went back and read the single mom comment after reading this, I didn't see it before as I usually skip his posts entirely or often at most skim them if they're short and someone respectable has responded to him. Yeah, that's some chickenshit nonsense

Okay and?

That doesn't make sense in the context because it wasn't a general statement.

Right there when you proved to everyone itt that you don’t understand the very idea of socialism. And your defense to that is that I don’t know your personal history? Lol gtfo

20 something? Look at my join date you dink. Before you go making more dumbass npc “digs” at me, maybe stop to think about how I would know what you’re entitled to when you retire before you try to write me another sob story about your time at Polk. Or should I now say Johnson.

Got it.

You're an advocate for socialism.

Say no more. It explains everything.

<{clintugh}>

I'll ignore this is one of those thinly vailed brag threads.

At some point a 40 year old man needs to look right. I hope you got a couple of fly outfits in your closet. You can't be looking like you work at the dollar tree all the time. Gotta head to the Banana Republic outlet at least.
Clothes are different than fancy cars. People will judge you by looks, so you better look at least decent when you are poor and trying to come up. I don’t get upset with poor people buying nice clothes at all. Though if you go and get all hooded out like that cartoon, it won’t really help lol. Should get some tailored clothes at least though
