Pride’s Heavyweights, Middleweights (LHW) and Welterweights (MW), were much better than their UFC counterparts in the early 2000’s. That’s not even debatable. To put it into perspective, Jeremy Horn and Babalu were in the title picture for the UFC LHW title at that point in time. Rampage kicked Chuck’s ass in Japan and then ended his title reign in the UFC.

There was a point that Pride was neck and neck with the UFC. It was when fedor ruled HW and UFC sent Liddell over to fight Rampage but he got beat up. UFC was number one but it wasnt clear cut as you say. The MW and up was suspect.

The UFC wasn't number one at that time though....

And it was pretty clear cut that it wasn't as well.

Fedors first loss was his 32nd fight
Mirko lost to Gonzaga in his 27th mma fight (he also had fought 26 kickboxing matches)
Rampage enters UFC w 32 fights
Wanderlei had like 40 fights when he fought chuck

How long are they supposed to keep that up?

Now if you dont think wear and tear and slowing down after 30 fucking fights isnt a possibility...how many fights does the guys fighting today at hw have,let's see.
As of today:

Jds 25 fights. Allready signs of slowing down for some years now
Overeem has a miraculous 62 mma fights. Pride o.g. of course. Slowing down now but held up ok against the other aging elites of his time.
Fabricio werdum 32 fights. Def slowing down. Pride o.g.
Arlovski 42 fights. Been slowing down forever. Lost to GodFedor in the Russia v belarus affliction conflict
Cain Velasquez 16 fights. Wear and tear is a thing?! Omg.
