In Pride, why weren't elbows allowed?

No. To make fights more exciting you allow MORE techniques, not take them away.

That's too simplistic of a reasoning and doesn't echo well in the reality

Why some techniques make fights more exciting ? Because they increase the finishing rate either by ko or submission, the fluidity of the fight and its action by reducing the stalling potential

Other techniques can make the fight more boring because they increase the stalling phases, and drastically sometimes

Elbows on the ground are an example. When you can stay sticked to your opponent without moving or creating any substancial action, and your only offense are some very short elbows that don't do real damage but allow you to stay glued and to not create space so the oponent doesn't scramble/sweep/submit you that is very boring to see for 3 rounds or more. Not exciting

If they stay glued to their chest then they get fucked up by elbows from the bottom like Diego did to Guida or what Florian was known for. Elbows are the most effective strike to combat LnP. Unfortunately, most fighters suck at utilizing this technique.

If a fighter is cut but good to go, then let it happen. I prefer ONE's rules. They do it right. Don't limit fighters.
Although ONE allows soccer kicks and knees to the head of a grounded opponent, they don't allow head stomps, but that's still better than allowing stomps and restricting elbows.

I think the best ruleset would be the Pride rules with the addition of elbows to the head being allowed. This ruleset was used in a few Rizin matches and it should be used more often in future Rizin events.

I NEVER understood why Pride banned elbows BUT, allowed soccer kicks to the head and, skyscraper knees in a north south position.

Does anyone know the reasoning behind banning elbows?

IDK that's a strange one. I'd argue that it's due to the damage but they allow soccer kicks to the head.
I think it may just not look as exciting, despite that one post w Guida they're usually not that fun cuz the distance you need to travel isn't much. So you could do a lot of damage from very close and the fans see nothing.

Cuts.

They caused cuts and a lot of bleeding. Remember PRIDE stopped the fight and let the doctor in, and fighters get treated every time there was a cut.
Pride was the gentlemen's sport, where the UFC is just barbaric and blood lust.

Cuts. They ddidnt want blood. Asian tv broadcasters hate blood, might even be laws about it. In an early Road FC bout in Korea, someone got elbowed and bled everywhere, and I believe Road got fined for it by the network they were on. They banned elbows after that.

ONE rules limits fighters in a lot ways
