I live in NC and started researching about our native alligator population that I've known very little about. I'm an avid fisherman and hunter and I've never seen a gator in this state in the wild, I have however seen a few while fishing in Alabama back in the 90's. When hunting I do not avoid swamps and wetland while scouting and have on occasion been in waist deep water when looking around areas that sit between wetlands on our hunting lease. Anyway, this Gator depicted below was killed approx three years back about 100 miles from where I hunt in Robeson County NC. It attacked a women's dog and snatched it while she was walking the dog, conservation officers shot it and estimate it was over 12' and in excess of 500 lbs. It ate the women's 80 pound husky, not exactly a little dog. There have been some smaller gators (even a 6 footer) captured closer to my property and house, only about 10 miles, but these have been few and far between. Anyway getting more of an awareness about the rising alligator population has me a little worried about my outdoor activities, namely taking the kids tubing st the local lakes and wandering around knee deep in wetlands. Anyone actually had an encounter with a gator in the wild here? I'm probebly paranoid but the safety of my young ones is so,etching I won't take lightly....

Anyway I you live in the Southeast and don't know about gators became you've never seen one it might be worth taking a look into for your own awareness.

Could be some fuckery with that pic, and not just them standing 10ft back from it. Does anyone remember the "Hogzilla" hoax from several years back?

EDIT just did a bit of googling, and it appears that gators of maneating size are sighted frequently enough in NC.

only time im in water deeper than a puddle is in a pool bro. also, gator population near me is 0.

One of my friends studies the gator population down in NC. Be alert and pay attention to your surroundings. There is a large gator population in FL and there are rarely attacks.

We should really just wipe out the population.

I thought Hogzilla was real? Domesticated pigs get that big. One got loose and pigs are very quick to go feral (get fur, tusks, etc) when they get in the wild.

Yep. Eye opener for sure. Last month my oldest son and I were playing at that very same beach at Disney. You just don't think about these sort of things when you are having fun, especially on vacation.

God bless that little kid and his family. Really sucks.

You're on the west coast.
Pointless interjection.

These types of interactions are
only natural. We can't expect to
integrate ourselves into an
ecologically rich area & not
encounter tragedies like this.
Hurricanes& below sea level housing
is one example. CA mountains
& cougars, is another...

The key is awareness, education
& yes, some population control.
But no reason to go about it
mindlessly. Gators can be used
for a plethora of things. Namely,
food & clothing for pimps.

I mean southerners.

For the sake of argument, if the gators were wiped out, how would it affect the ecosystem?

Tremendously, they are an extremely important part of the ecosystem. As young they are important food sources for many animals and they are important predators of many different small species. As they grow they obviously take larger prey items and it would have resounding effects on the entire ecosystem.

last I heard I think it was confirmed that hogzilla was raised in captivity and then just shot. Could be false though. I tried googling it and it's just a confusing mess at this point.

EDIt it's worse than I thought even. there are several hogzillas. It appears that one of the most famous, one that was shot by an 11 year old fat kid, was sold from a breeder to a game preserve like a week before it was shot. Apparently the kid's dad was butthurt about it, but let's real- if you can't tell just from behavior that you're dealing with a tame animal, the animals you normally "hunt" at these preserves are basically tame as well.

I saw a Gator when I was Jogging on Cherry Point , I was on the Bridge that goes over the river , good size too probably between 7-8 feet. These fucking mini dinosaurs adapt well.

We've encountered a few here in north Alabama. I live on the water, never worried to much about it before, but after witnessing that the other day, guess I will be.

I live close to Charleston, SC. I see alligators fairly regularly when I fish, especially in Goose Creek Reservoir.
