The article below mentions that the studio was trying to get QT to cast Johnny Depp. And also that Bruce Willis' part was originally offered to Matt Dillon.

I've also heard in the past that Michael Madsen was originally supposed to be in it, and Lawrence Fishburn was considered too.

So if all those original casting choices were made, how do you think the movie would've turned out?

Jules - Lawrence Fishburn
Vincent Vega - Michael Madsen (it probably would've been Vick Vega, not Vincent)
Butch - Matt Dillon
???? - Johnny Depp (what part would he have played? Tim Roth's maybe?)

Fishburn and Madsen would’ve been fantastic in those roles. Chemistry would’ve been different though as the personalities don’t match the characters we’ve come to know being portrayed by Jackson and Travolta. They’d have made it work well though.

I’m guessing Depp would’ve been the heroin dealer, Lance but who knows. He’d have been fine doing that.

Butch needs to be Bruce Willis. No substitutions there IMO.

I’d be interested to see it though.

Fishburn is fine but he’s no Sam Jackson. Jackson put that role over the top where I don’t think LF could have matched the animated intensity Sam brought to it.

Fishburn turned it down because of all the heroin use.

It would've still be a fine movie as those actors are also solid choices. The biggest change would be Lawrence Fishburne and Samuel L Jackson though, as I cannot imagine anyone else playing Jules

Jules - Lawrence Fishburn
Imagine if Samuel L Jackson swapped this role with Lawrence Fishburne in the Matrix

"Did I stutter Neo? Take the motherfucking red pill"

Lance is exactly who I thought he could play. Kind of a small part though, which is why I started thinking maybe Tim Roth's character instead.

Not a huge Depp fan overall, but he killed it as Thompson in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.

I dont think anyone could have topped Jackson. That role practically made him what he is today. Fishburne would be worse.

Dillon as Butch could be interesting. I think Dillon is pretty underrated. Him in the Butch role would created a little bit of a different impact. Willis was great in the role, but I dont think he's necessarily irreplaceable.

Madsen is a bit of a wildcard. He has a distinctive presence thats certainly more dark and intimidating than Travolta. I dont know if he could do the banter as well as Travolta did, but he would have been a darker choice. For instance when Vega tries to stare down Butch in the bar, Travolta doing it comes off as kind of "Who's this dork trying to stare down a prize fighter", but if Madsen did thered certainly be Mr Blonde vibes and I think he'd pull it off a bit better. Kinda tough to judge. It certainly would have been different.

I feel like Depp would have been some sort of minor role like the Stoltz or Roth role. He'd have been fine in either. The drug dealer role would have probably been the better fit at the time.

Depp: The Gimp
Matt Dillon: Vincent
Lawrence Fishburn: Captain Koons
Michael Madsen: Zed
