I'm Gonna Get a Cat, Any Advice?

Thanks again to all the Sherbros, I'm going to interview tomorrow for a rescue ragdoll kitty. Beeeautiful cat...appreciate the recommendation.

She's FIV+ though, anyone have any experience with those?

That's bad news. The cat has aids. Litterally.

She will not have a happy ending and will have to be euthanasied at some point.

I would not get a Alphabet cat. Like others said, probably has aids. And will require a lot of gender surgery's that will cost you alot of money.

I don’t—but isn’t this your first cat? If you’re committed to caring for it, I commend you. An FIV positive cat needs a lot of care, from medications to their diet. Please make sure your lifestyle accommodates that, and you’re ready for that. If it works for you and you feel attached to the cat and want to adopt it, I wish you the best,

It’s great if you’re getting a cat with FIV+ so it doesn’t have to live the rest of its life in a cage. Just know the life expectancy isn’t as long and you will probably have to get her meds .

Poor kitty

Do not get a shelter animal as a first pet. Pets end up in a shelter after some unpleasant events. it is a lottery, and an inexperienced owner may get a handful.
Get a ragdoll breed kitten. They tick all the boxes except allergies - I have no idea how allergy-inducing they are, but you can google it.
Tbf sometimes you can adopt kittens at the shelters too. That's where I got one of my cats, he was just a couple months old when I got him.

I was a dog person. Been converted to a cat person. Had as many as six at one time. The "had to hunt outdoors" cat became unhealthy and left for his last hunt, never to return. Then to old man cat, 21 years old, died. Down to 4.

Each has a different personality. Don't neuter a male cat too soon, because it will affect them later in their life with urinary issues. The may try to mark their territory, and once they start that you can have them neutered. Female cats, generally are less affectionate. They may come to you for affection. Male cats are more like dogs, and may be more like a lap cat.

We got our first one, about 2 years ago.

She's young and pretty healthy, at this point.
Sometimes overgrooms and licks herself a bit raw. But we think that's probably related to her unhappy prior homes and not to the FIV.

Thanks (almost) everyone for the advice.

I did pass the interview and my little ragdoll kitty is coming on Wednesday!

I've done a lot of reading and FIV+ cats generally have almost as long a life span as regular cats. I have to stay on top of her health and never miss a checkup but other than that she should be like any other cat. She can't go outside but I wasn't planning on letting any cat outside...and ragdolls can't be outside cats anyway.

She will get tons of attention, I work from home (violin teacher) and I'll be there all day to take care of her. My students are almost more excited than I am for the kitty, I think she'll be getting lots of pets from them too.

I spent a shit ton at Amazon yesterday and need to prep my house now. She's gonna need a few days to decompress and explore. I have a big house that's gonna require some getting used to.

Super excited!
