I rowed for 8 years including on the Junior Olympic Team, Ivy League, and National Team (5:58 2K). The erg is a form for torture for me and I no longer listen to certain songs like any Rage Against the Machine songs because it brings back memories of sweaty, gross workouts. We used to do 2 steady-state 10 K’s at about a 1:52 split at 18 SPM (strokes per minute) before we even went on the water as a “warm up.”
I also LMAO when I see people at the gym just crank their backs on it. That’s a terrific way to get injured. Remember the order is legs, back, arms, and in that same order of importance in terms of where you focus your power. Also remember to go back up the slide arms, back, legs. If your calves are ever sore from a erg workout, you are rushing the slide.
Try doing just one 2k all out at 32+ SPM on a 4 or 5 resistance if you want the hardest (brief) workout of your life.
