But you're wrong. Because the principal that decides the next title shot is the organization, not the champion. And that organization has the choice as to whether to have an interim belt or not. They didn't HAVE to make Tom/Pavlo an interim title fight. They CHOSE to. Meaning, the decision on "who's next" was determined at that point, not "TBD".

It's fine to say "fake belt" etc and in some ways you're right. But not as it pertains to determining the next fight for the actual champ once they're ready. The UFC by creating the interim belt hasn't just said "this is now the #1 contender". It's a step past that. It's them cementing that person not just as the #1 contender, but as the next person to fight for the actual title.

People bitched about the Stipe fight but I actually had no issues with that because it was booked prior to Aspinall winning the interim belt. But now? Jon fights Tom, or vacates and fights Alex or whoever else he wants.

Its a mindset that has poisoned the boxing fanbase for a while and now we are seeing it in MMA too. Fanboying so hard over a fighter that you blindly defend him from being in the fights that you as a fan should want to see.

Whoever you prefer or think will win, Jon/Tom is one of the biggest fights that could be made in MMA right now, arguably the biggest. Its one of the few HW fights these days that actually feels big time. Arguing against it happening as an MMA fan is utterly fucking bizarre.
