If a number of packs of wolves[largest variety] were introduced into various African countries do you think they'd survive successfully?
For the sake of the argument we'll have to assume that they'll be ok with living with hot weather at certain times of each year.

What animals would end up as their prey?
Would they be more suited to the open plains or a more wooded area?
Which animals would prey upon them?

I could see a pack of wolves running down lone hyenas and killing them. I know forum members love hyenas[as do i] and usually can't say enough great things about them but i don't think they'd be a match for wolf.
Yes hyenas have a powerful bite-force but they're not as agile as a wolf or as fast. Also when hyenas are challenged by other animals they tend to just roll on their back and not fight.

Well I don't know if theyd manage to adapt to the climate difference in terms of heat.

That aside, they'd have to be in considerably larger packs to be a deterrent to lions.

And I expect they'd continue to utilise hunting in packs, evening the load.

All those Africa documentarys they show numerous African wild dogs or hyeiners in close proximity competing for leftovers.

I've seen packs of hyenas punk lions off. Lions are by far the softest of the large predators and wolves compete with bull Elks and grizzlies (aka something tougher and scarier than a lion) all the time.

Historically there were wolves in Northern Africa, and still are endangered populations in Egypt and Ethiopia. Sorta the same deal as Bears, which used to live in Northern Africa. Jackals and African wild dogs are more primitive relatives of wolves. The Gray Wolf is the most wide spread large land animal in the world.

Well it has been documented in Asia that Tiger presence in same area as wolves have always decreased wolf numbers. I can only imagine what a hyena pack would do, let alone a lion pride.
Grizzly bears are more than enough for Wolves in the wild, and have been known to kill them in captivity. Thats just one single bear.
Also I read somewhere that wolves are only like 23 percent successful in their hunts. It is why they go on a killing spree if they can, not because they kill for sport but to horde the bodies for the harsh winter.
