Social If we ever contact intelligent life outside earth, what should we do next?

The context in how we meet obviously matters. It will probably be the single biggest event of our species if it happens.

If we meet them in space it's a different story but if they come to us while we're still in our current level of tech, we should play nice as possible.

I always found it unbelievable how in movies the military types are quick to attack aliens. A highly advanced race that traveled untold light years in space ships with technology that is likely unfathomable to us just arrived at earth, and you're a 4 star general and presumably not an idiot, and you think it'd be a good idea to try to shoot missiles at them?
no, you're wrong, especially about the military, their first option is aggression and their first concerns are suspicious and projections of hostility. Just look at lou elizondo, one of the better observers but he's firmly in the camp that they could very well be hostile. That's his training and his job to think like that and he does.

This reminds me of a joke. So:

Alien spaceship lands in the yard of a rural farm home. Husband and wife go outside to see what's happening. Aliens come out and say they are here to have sex with humans for research purposes. Husband and wife agree to it so wife goes to the house with the male alien and husband goes to the spaceship with the female.

At the house, male alien gets naked. His dick is very short and thin. The wife starts laughing and says "this isn't going to work". Alien says "wait a second" and starts hitting his nose. Every time he does, his dick gets longer. So the wife says "that's neat, but this still won't work". Alien says "hold on". He starts pulling his ears and every time he does, his dick gets thicker. The wife is now very excited and they do their thing.

Next day...husband returns and male alien goes back to the spaceship and leaves. Husband asks his wife how was it? She says "Well....I'm not gonna lie. It was one of the best sexual experiences I ever had. What about you?" Husband answers "Fucking awful. That bitch just kept smacking me in the nose and pulling my ears all night long."

I don't know who that is but let's hope we don't listen to that guy. I wouldn't think it would take a lot of logical reasoning to assume that someone with galaxy traversing spaceships would have military tech that would make us look like cavemen throwing rocks at gunships, but what do I know.

lol that so true, nicely said.

lol good one.

I'll teach them about love and they'll teach me about faster than light travel

there wouldn't be just one faction and one idea of how to handle them, there would be some people so macho and so aggressive that that would be the first response. Depending on what those beings want, if anything, our response may vary. If they were to try to make slaves or harm us, a lot of us would rebel, if they are peaceful, some of us would still be aggressive.

Like I say though, there probably has been some form of communication, even if it's minimal between these beings if they exist and governments, the governments wouldn't see the necessity of us needing to know about them.

One theory is that a huge uptick in sightings occurred right after we started into the nuclear bombs, I've heard a story that these creatures did tell the countries who were capable, to knock off the mid-air nuclear explosions for some reason. But a main theory is that they are watching us closer now that we're nuclear capable.

Not just Lou.

Hawking was also of the opinion that if the dark forest theory is accurate making contact with another advanced civilization has a significant likelihood of ending catastrophically for us.

It's possible govt's have already communicated with them and just don't tell us. So far, it seems as though they don't really have much interest in us. Elizondo thinks that they are coming from either another dimension, outer space or here. Lots of scientists like Neil Tyson think that space travel would be impossible, but what if they are coming from here? Then, I wonder how or why would they hide from us and for how long? Also, if they are native to earth, they'd have to be small, population wise, or we'd see them a lot more.

I tend to think that they are of course so far advanced that we wouldn't be able to do much but what if they leave us no choice? It's the cowboys vs. the indians again. Also, what if we're just a nuisance to them? We are bad for the earth, we are not good for much else other than ourselves really, I could see them just wanting to unburden themselves.

Also, there are theories, wacky ones, that human civilization was founded with the help from aliens, that we were slaves to aliens thousands of years ago. That we may have been tinkered with by aliens and some of our religions may have been influenced by them.

So far, they are just being mysterious and although I'm always the first to be skeptical of the voluminous footage we have of them, we should always think it's fake before we think it's real, some of it seems to be awful realistic looking to me. Not only that, like I keep saying, when i was a kid, it was always the hillbillies who saw ufo's, now it's people with at least half a brain like pilots who are saying it. I think there is really something to it.

Send in this guy.

Absolutely nothing would happen. Most humans are so boring that the existence or non-existence of aliens is irrelevant to them. They would panic for a day or two, think "Wait... How does this affect me in any way?" because narcissism gonna narcissism, still show up for work Monday morning like nothing happened, still believe every lie out of the bankers and politicians' mouths, then go home and catch up on the latest episode of the Kardashians. That's their level of existence, it doesn't go any higher. The aliens would lock their UFO doors and fly away because they know y'all dumb and violent and they don't want to deal with it. They wouldn't even consider you worthy of a conversation, and you wouldn't be able to blame them for it.

Create compartmentalized black projects that hide the fact and try to weaponize it whilst running misinformation campaigns to control the narrative by ridiculing the idea on the social front but framing it in advantageous ways towards military, political, and economic goals on the frontline channels.
