If Nelson vs Carwin had happened

If Roy could have survived round one he would have had a chance to catch Carwin in the next 2 rounds. But that is a big IF.

carwin can end it with several different styles of punches whereas nelson needs
that huge overhand. if were giving it to the guy with more ko power it would be carwin.

If Roy could have just taken a bunch of hits, Carwin would have gassed out and roy could have thrown on a sloppy arm triangle.

Why? Nelson has a good chin and was a better overall striker than Carwin. I don't see any reason at all to think that Carwin would have been able to finish Roy in the first round. He never finished anyone that was as hard to finish as Roy.

I love this myth that Carwin has the worst cardio in the history of the sport. The guy gassed ONCE and that was from punching Brock about a thousand times like a meth-fueled jackhammer.

Carwin was no cardio machine, that's for sure, but his terrible cardio is a myth.

Nelson is a lot craftier than he gets credit for. You don't KO half the division with the same punch without set ups.
If Carwin tries to box on the outside with Roy he goes down more times than he wins.
Carwin best gameplan would dirtybox against the cage and take Roy down if possible (and I give him a good chance, he's one of the few guys at HW compact, powerful and with wrestling chops enough to take Roy down, that fat guy is sure hard to take to the mat).

It basically comes to who ends up with his back to the cage. That guy is going to sleep, or at least get pounced pretty bad and lose a decision.

I think Roy would have tagged Carwin with a good one. Then Carwin would tag him back and Roy would be staring up at the lights from the flat of his back.

He has never proved otherwise, he went outside the 1st twice on his career, and he lost both times.
Hard to blame him for looking spent after the first round against JDS. That guy got his shit pushed in hard in that round.

After seeing Mir completely ragdoll Nelson, I would have to say Carwin wins this most likely. He probably would have been able to to push Nelson up against the cage and unload those uppercuts.

I do not believe I ever said he had terrible cardio, just that I am pretty sure Roy had better, certainly at the time when they were scheduled to fight.

Carwin probably did have the worst cardio in the history of the sport if we're focusing on ranked guys. He only left the first round in two fights, and he wasn't remotely competitive past that point in either one. He was ridiculously gassed in the first round against Lesnar.

And FYI, he threw 79 strikes in the first round against Lesnar, many of them on the ground. That's about as many as JDS threw against him in the first round of their fight.

It would have been a slug fest for sure.

Each had a punchers chance.

I give the edge to Carwin cause his punches are EXTREME.

As the commentators probably exaggerate "I can feel it at my desk!!"

EXTREME!!!!!

Carwin could have used his size and better wrestling to clinch Nelson and beat him up against the cage. Or maybe even take him down and pound him out.

Nelson wasn't very strong and hasn't tapped out anyone in years.

it would have been a fun fight, was stupid idea having those 2 as TUF coaches

I dunno about Carwin being a sure thing. Roy isn't exactly a cardio machine, but if he survived the first round against Carwin, he would just keep throwing that overhand until it did its grisly duty. Roy likes to brawl, but he's not above playing it safe (like he did on TUF 10), and for his part, Carwin's striking defense wasn't his strong suit - he would take a punch to give a punch, which is not a sound strategy for continued success.

Agree with this. Carwin would be the favorite but Nelson would be a live dog for usre. He even had some success against Hunt before getting KOed and Carwin isn't on Hunt's level, not even close.

That said as you pointed out he can be nasty in the clinch and Miocic and Werdum had success there against Nelson, I imagine Carwin would too.

I'm a fan of both fighters. While Big Country may be a big puncher, he still had nowhere near the kind of power that Shane did! Not to mention that Carwin stood in there with JDS and took much more of a beating than Roy could've ever dished out. Pure speculation, of course.... I don't see how Shane would've lost...

I'm surprised to see so many people picking Carwin. I wouldn't be so sure, Roy is devastating against mid to low tier competitions. Its only against the cream of the crop that he struggles with. Carwin, for all his hype was a very limited guy ( even more so than Nelson). Roy via being an overall better and well rounded fighter.

It's a damn shame that Carwin pulled out and that fight never happened, I was really looking forward to it. What do you think would have happened had it gone down? I think it would have been basically even odds, both heavy ko punchers, Carwin obviously physically stronger but the huge punching Roy with his own one punch ko power and his iron chin.

I haven't read the thread yet but I'm guessing most would side with Carwin. I think it's a near 50/50 fight but I'd slightly favor Nelson. Both guys are tough as hell and hit hard as hell, that said I think Nelson would have a better gas tank in the fight. Carwin's muscles are too big and would gas him out.
