I realize we all live in different parts of the world so local/regional/national comps are on at different times, and as a result of this, depending on your goals people would be aiming to peak at different times of the year.

However, looking to the major comps (worlds etc and comps of same caliber) , what woudl you define as the BJJ season ?

February through June is gi, September through November nogi

Pretty much what Ice 9 said, but the Europeans are in January.

I think it be pointless to separate the two... We got people training half a year with no tournaments just to compete in a category that occurs in a season.

Spring... People who were too lazy and got fat during winter start showing up again, and then quit again when it gets too hot in summer

From 6 week-ish before Europeans until worlds
for the top tier guys

local tournaments only to test

There is no season.
It is a martial art.
You train every week of the sharpen your skills.
You test then at competition if you are into competition.
You will notice that local competition organised are usually held before graduation. It is considered the grading system.
So usually graduation is done twice a year. June and December so expect a competition before the graduation.
Of course, in some places you can compete more or less depending on how develop the sport is developed.
It will be nice for local club to invite each others for inter club competition held at each other to reduce costs. But politics often make impossible.
