- Aspinall, who was the interim heavyweight champion at the time, was on standby in case either Jones or Miocic pulled out of the bout.
What am I missing here? I hate to defend Jones but how would he have gotten out of that one?

Probably counted on both him and Stipe being well paid for this one and counted on Stipe laid off a few years making it, no questions asked.
Still surprised nobody talks about this. the match could have happened as a replacement event.Calculated risk. Stipe had one last shot at a big payday. Jones knew Stipe would pretty much have to lose a limb in a freak accident to pull out.
And let's say Stipe did pull out a couple weeks before the fight...nothing stopping Jones from getting an injury while training a few days later that doesn't allow him to fight.
Yeah, he could have... but he didn't.He pulled out once so of course stipe could have.
Did it prove Stipe was willing to fight him????What am I missing here? I hate to defend Jones but how would he have gotten out of that one?

Aha, but then what use is there to have Aspinall as a back-up? Jones doesnt accept it anyway. Did they mean Aspinall was primarily a back-up for jones?Jones didn’t have to accept the fight. They still have to make a formal offer that has to be accepted.
Look at what happened at UFC 151, Hendo pulled out and Jones declined Sonnen short notice.
Even if Tom was the back up, Jon doesn’t have to take the fight
Couldnt he just say no like he did to chael?Again, if Stipe pulled out and Jones really didn't wanna fight Aspinall, Jones could then just "get injured while training" and the fight wouldn't happen. He had avenues to avoid fighting Aspinall even if Stipe did pull out.

he said the training camp would have been totally different. sounds fair. No, and it wouldn't be the first time Jones has turned down a replacement opponent and wrecked a card.
How can you say in case? He's made it very clear that he won't fight him.In case Jon would accept.
