Iceberg Slim - Pimp Audiobook

Read it a long time ago, dont remember too much about it but I do remember being surprised at how flawed and weak he was at some points in the story just because of how the book and the man himself had been glamorized and lionized in gangsta rap songs

Now that Im older and wiser and understand the weaknesses of the world a lot better its not surprising at all, but, at the time, it did open my eyes a bit as an impressionable young mark that was All In on the street life and all the bullshit and garbage that came along with it

How come every time you hear "pimping ain't easy" it is always being said by someone who very very clearly does not have a job.

Like... I'm not sure you are really qualified to make that statement sir. What is your frame of reference? Have you ever held a regular job down for a prolonged period of time?

I remember reading that book back the 80’s, can’t believe people are still talking about him.

I prefer Turp Daddy Slim

Oh yeah it's filthy man, just listening to the first 10 minutes or so brings that feeling right back. It certainly doesn't come across as glamorous as we were lead to believe. Sitting in a car with a bunch of whores that stink of dick and shit isn't what I pictured after the way people like Ice T has spoken about him

So is it any good? Like worth my time?

I guess if you have the time go for it, at this stage of my life I wouldn’t, but if you like a story of a guy who made his living off peddling flesh, was shooting heroin etc, you’ll probably like it.

i skimmed it, he is a clever fella, and he sagely points out how we're all really whores out here, how we're all tamed and manipulated. Don't kid yourselves, anyone that has just conformed all their lives, which is most of us, you're just a whore no matter how you see yourself. Nothing cool or glamourous about pimping and think anyone believes it is is a lowlife in general.

Also, he is an interesting guy, not just a lowlife pimp, he seemed to evolve into a pretty decent family man and he ironically had several daughters who all came off like sweet daddy's girls in the docu I saw.

here's an interview with the older Ice.

might be, if you can see through the vileness and understand our world much better than most people do.

another interesting story. Mike Tyson got friendly with the elderly and destitute Iceberg and revered him. Apparently, he asked Mike to bury him in a mausoleum saying he was too beautiful to be put into the ground and eaten by worms. Mike did.

Also, I never believe bios or autobios 100 percent, in fact, I consider it amazing if I think 75 percent of a bio is true. That's to say, who knows how much of the book was sensationalized to make it more sellable. His wife at the time helped write it and I could see them both wanting the money.
