Jim Jeffries has a pretty good bit on that dynamic.Someone raised an interesting question about musical acts accused of these crimes.
If MJ had been found beyond any doubt to be guilty of abuse would everyone throw their copy of Thriller away? Or delete it if you wanna be petty?
Basically, "How famous do you have to be, in order to get away with...that thing". Compares Paul McCartney to Gary Glitter. It's a good bit.
That said, I think even among sex offenders, this guy is on the lowest rung of the ladder(or highest?). I don't think any celebrity could withstand that kind of depravity being brought to light. I mean, babies? It's pretty gross at how people will sort of excuse young teens getting taken advantage of by famous people, but I don't see anybody looking the other way on what this guy did, no matter how famous they are.
MJ would've been a good test, as that was involving children and not "underage" people. Also have to wonder if this guy would've been exposed to the extent he was, if he was super famous and not some guy in a semi-famous band.
